"What happened?" Evelyn quickly asked him when she saw Theodore put down his fork loudly.
Glancing toward the stairs, Theodore lowered his voice and said, "I have to go to the company. Go upstairs and see Grandpa after you are done eating."
"Is it related to the crime that happened in The Forest in West City?"
"No. I have to go."
"What..."
Seeing Theodore's figure leaving the dining room, Evelyn didn't ask further. She finished her lunch alone and carefully cleaned her scalpel with a paper towel. She kept the scalpel with her and was ready to head upstairs.
When she passed by the living room, she saw Charlotte sitting in the living room. She paused and turned back into the living room.
Probably because she was throwing up so badly before, Charlotte didn't look very good. When she saw Evelyn enter, she immediately straightened up and looked at Evelyn with a displeased look.
Evelyn ignored Charlotte's displeasure and sat down at the side of the sofa. She took an apple from the fruit tray and slowly cut it with the scalpel that she had kept.
Charlotte's face changed again as she jumped up. "H-How dare you use the knife that had touched the dead to cut the steak and apple? Are you sick?"
"It's nothing. It has been disinfected." Evelyn smiled casually and took a bite of the cut apple just in time.
"You're a psychopath!" Charlotte, who was extremely repulsed, took a few steps away with a face of disgust.
Evelyn wasn't angry at all. She ate the apple and smiled. "I'm so sorry. Because I'm so used to using this knife that I've made you shocked. But this knife is really good. Normally, other than using it to dissect bodies, I even use it to slaughter the chickens and ducks as well as dissect fish at home. With just a slice through it, the blood would start oozing out. Tsk, it's even warm."
"Stop talking!"
Evelyn ignored Charlotte's pale face and continued explaining while smiling. "The feeling of dissecting bodies is totally different from slaughtering chickens and ducks because the chickens and ducks are still moving, whereas the bodies are completely still. Normally, the bodies are black and blue when they are sent over. Their complexions are extremely pale, just like—"
"I told you to stop talking! Are you deaf?"
"Yes, they look like your complexion now!"
"Get out! You're a psychopath! Get out!" Charlotte yelled but quickly covered her mouth. There was another wave of nausea hit her again.
Of course, Evelyn wouldn't leave. Theodore had said that this was his home and hers too. If there were someone who needed to leave, it was Charlotte who was the outsider. However, she didn't order Charlotte to leave. She smiled and looked at Charlotte while she ate her apple bit by bit.
Charlotte was furious at Evelyn for behaving like this, but she had no one to help her out. Moreover, Evelyn even had a 'weapon' with her. She didn't dare to act rashly. After patting over her chest, she pointed at Evelyn and scolded, "Evelyn Morgan, do you really think you hold the position as this house's mistress firmly? Hmph, Let's see how long you can continue acting so cocky!"
Grandpa had already said that there was no place in this house for this woman.
Evelyn threw the apple core into the trashcan and took some paper towels to wipe her mouth. After that, she wiped her scalpel as she pretended to sigh and said, "Miss Dean, to tell you the truth, I'm actually unwilling to stay in this house for even a moment longer. I wish there was someone to kick me out of this house. Well, this is all Theo's fault for wanting me so much and not letting me go no matter what."
"Tsk, what you said sounded even sweeter than singing." Charlotte had a disdainful look. "If you really don't want to stay in this house, you can leave now. Theo is not here, so no one will stop you."
"Didn't you always want me to leave? Because only if I'm gone, you can have the chance to approach Theo." Evelyn looked at Charlotte. When Charlotte didn't respond, she continued and said, "Actually I've known it from the start. You like Theo, but I really don't like him. How about I help you create an opportunity to approach Theo? You must take the opportunity to make him fall in love with you, so he can finally let me go."
Charlotte was stunned by her sincerity. But at this moment, Evelyn suddenly hit the back of her head and said pitifully, "Oh, I just remembered that Theo doesn't like girls like you at all. I can no longer count on you."
Realizing that she was fooled, Charlotte was instantly furious and shouted, "Evelyn Morgan, don't be so complacent! There will be a time when you cry!"
"Oh, you're angry? I'm so sorry. I accidentally spoke the truth. I didn't discourage you, did I?" Although Evelyn was apologizing, she sounded extremely smug.
Charlotte's face was ghastly pale. She looked toward the stairs and saw no signs of the twin bodyguards. She knew that Ethan hadn't woken up yet. Without his assistance, she knew that she couldn't take any advantage of Evelyn and decided to ignore Evelyn. She grunted angrily and turned around to leave.
"Who's afraid of whom?" Evelyn didn't care about Charlotte disappearing through the door as she made a funny face behind her.
Yesterday, she accidentally let Charlotte slap her. Although she didn't slap her back, she had gotten her revenge by annoying Charlotte, and it was enough to make her happy. At this moment, she was in a very good mood.
She was not someone who could be pushed around easily.
Keeping the scalpel with her, she happily stood up and went upstairs. When she went to Ethan's room, she saw he hadn't woken up yet. After giving a few pieces of advice to the twins who were guarding him by his side, she went back into Theodore's room at a light and fast pace.
She took the whole set of anatomical tools out. Her joyful mood turned pitiful. After caressing the scalpel for a while, she finally put it back to its original place.
By then, she remembered the person who had given her the tools and also remembered the meetup with him tonight.
Oh!
Suddenly, she felt a jolt of realization.
Today was the third day of Martin and Claire's wedding. According to the customs of Arlington, today was the day the bridegroom would accompany the bride at her parents' home. At noon, they had to stay in his parents-in-law's house to have dinner. How would he have the time to meet up with her for dinner?
Could he and Claire...
That's impossible!
"They've always been in a good relationship! One is as gentle as jade, and the other quiet and kind. I had never even seen them argue before. They just got married. How could there be a conflict between them?
But there's always a possibility in everything, maybe...
If they really have broken up, then I will have the chance to...
Evelyn! Are you shameless?" Evelyn thought.
She hit the back of her head over and over again while cursing herself angrily.
At this moment, a WhatsApp message from Martin popped out from her phone. It was the specific location of the Grandview Mall and the number of the private room that they were going to have dinner tonight.
She hesitated for a while and replied to his message to ask, "Besides Claire, is there anyone else eating with us?"
"Claire has something to do. She can't go tonight."
If Claire couldn't go, would it be only him and her eating dinner tonight?
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat again.
"All right, stop overthinking. Maybe Martin had seen the scandals of Theodore and me and had wanted to meet up out of concern for me? I should think of a good explanation to give to Martin later." Evelyn thought.
She lay on the bed sullenly. Her heart couldn't calm down no matter what as her head was filled with the images of Martin smiling.
Although she had repeatedly denied her guesses and warned herself multiple times not to make wild guesses, she couldn't seem to restrain a certain desire in her heart.
In order to divert her attention, she took out her phone and took a careful look at all the relevant information she had collected for the case that happened in The Forest in West City to see if there were any missing details.
After looking at it for a while, she threw her phone to the side of the bed. She had too little information in her hands. Besides the pictures taken at the spot, she only had the basic information of the deceased. Of course, her so-called basic information was only the specific age and real name of the deceased, excluding the autopsy details.
"If I go to work during these two days, maybe I can get more information." With this thought in mind, she decided to get ready for work tomorrow.
She raised her hand and looked at her watch. Since it was still early, she stood up and went to Ethan's room again. After seeing that he hadn't woken up yet, she turned and walked back to her room again. To avoid her overthinking thoughts, she forced herself to watch the television and fell asleep after that until she was awakened by Theodore's call.
"What is it?" She picked up the phone groggily.
"Are you prepared?"
"Prepared for what?"
"You're not going for the meetup?"
Looking at her watch, she realized that it was almost six o'clock. Evelyn jumped up and said, "I-I'm going."
But she quickly felt there was something wrong. She then asked him timidly, "Are you going too?"
"I'm not going."
"That's great."
Evelyn was silently happy, but she didn't expect Theodore would add, "Noah will be sending you there."
"What? There's no need to go through so much trouble. I can call a cab myself..."
"He has already arrived. It's been decided. I still have things to do here."
"Well, there's really no need to go through..." When Evelyn heard the call ended, she had no choice but to put down her phone.
He had insisted on sending someone to drive her to the meetup. Was it because he was afraid that she wouldn't explain clearly to Martin about their relationship?
They were just going to maintain a fake relationship for two months at most. Was it really necessary to tell Martin?
It didn't matter anyway. If Martin had really come to see her because of the matter, she would tell him the truth; if he just simply wanted to see her, she wouldn't say anything then.
While she was thinking, she got up and changed clothes. Then, she simply packed, took her bag, and went out. As she passed by Ethan's room, she heard faint talking voices and subconsciously paused to listen carefully.
"Grandpa, do you want to have something else?"
Realizing it was Charlotte's voice, Evelyn immediately knew that Ethan was awake and had regained his right state of mind.
Just as she had expected, she could hear Ethan's voice after that. "There's no need. I'm already full."
"Then let me clean up the tableware."
"Thank you."
"Grandpa, if you speak like this to me, aren't you regarding me as an outsider?"
"Yes, I should not treat my granddaughter-in-law like an outsider."
"Grandpa, don't say that I'm your granddaughter-in-law again. If that woman hears this, she will come and mock me again." Charlotte looked like she'd been wronged.
It turned out Charlotte was talking about her behind her back.
Evelyn sneered disapprovingly.
"You're going to become my granddaughter-in-law sooner or later. This house has no place for that woman."
"You have ways to deal with her?"
"Yes."
Evelyn's heart turned cold as she tried to hear more of it. However, they had lowered their tone during this conversation. She couldn't hear anything and could only leave helplessly.
To be honest, she really wanted to know what their so-called good way was so that she could also lend them a helping hand.
Only God knew how bad she wanted Theodore to take the initiative to terminate the marriage contract with her. As long as the reason was not because of her, it meant that she hadn't broken the rules. So, she could finally leave the Kingsley family peacefully.
Unfortunately, she couldn't take the initiative to approach Ethan because Theodore was too clever. She couldn't bet on the safety of her parents.
It didn't matter anyway.
When she reached the door, she saw Noah had already opened the door and was waiting for her. She got into the car and reached Grandview Hotel. After Noah had left, she walked to the door of the private room as told. She subconsciously pinched her thigh and tried to take a few steps. Once she no longer felt the pain, she knocked on the door and walked in reassuringly.
"Evelyn, you're here?" Martin stood up and welcomed her. "Come, let me introduce you to a friend."
Evelyn then realized that there was also another young and handsome man besides Martin in the private room.
