Chapter 54 I Don’t Have A Choice

When Adrian found Evelyn at the airport, she was curled up in a corner of the waiting room, holding a hot water bottle and resting her eyes.

Evelyn sensed a burning gaze fixed on her and immediately opened her eyes, alert.

“Eve.” Adrian reached for her suitcase. “While the snow hasn’t piled up too deep yet, let me take you back to the city.”

Seeing Adrian's wet hair and clothes, Evelyn felt the snowfall outside had intensified.

“Just go. My affairs don’t need your help,” she coldly rejected him.

“The weather forecast says there will be heavy snow tonight and for the next couple of days. The airline will continue to issue cancellation announcements shortly.”

Adrian’s expression grew serious as he glanced at his watch. “In two hours, the number of stranded passengers will keep increasing. Once the snow gets too deep, the airport will become an island, and the city’s rescue efforts won’t be able to keep up. By then, with over ten thousand passengers here, they won’t even be able to get food, let alone hot water.”

Evelyn’s stubbornness was suddenly worn down by harsh reality, yet she still didn’t want to go back with him.

“I can’t find a hotel. You can ask someone you know to book a room for me; I’ll pay double or triple the rate.”

“Do you really think that after three days of heavy snow, the hotels here will still have power and water?” Adrian said, a hint of urgency creeping into his voice as he rolled up his sleeves. “What usually takes twenty-five minutes by car took me an hour and two minutes this time. If you keep resisting, I’ll have to carry you back to the car and take you to the city.”

Evelyn felt a pang of anxiety.

When she rode to the airport, the roads had been very slippery, and the driver could barely reach forty miles per hour. Now...

Defeated, she bit her lip.

She followed Adrian out of the waiting room and into a black Hummer. This time, Adrian had brought a driver, a man in his forties with excellent driving skills.

Despite Evelyn's mental preparation, as they drove out of the airport, her heart raced to her throat.

The wind howled, and the snow fell even heavier. The wipers struggled to keep up as the snowflakes crashed against the windshield like feathers, rendering the road invisible.

Adrian hadn’t lied; the weather was even worse than he had described.

He sat in the passenger seat while she occupied the back seat, both of them keeping their distance.

The driver, a chatterbox, grumbled about the weather while jokingly addressing Evelyn. “Miss Joy, Mr. Johnson and I are your loyal fans. When you finally become a big star and hold a fan meeting, don’t forget us.”

“Hosts aren’t stars or internet celebrities; we can’t stay popular forever,” she replied dismissively, her attention focused on her phone screen.

Jason was quite attuned to current events, so he must know about the situation in Lycheeville. She had already told him in her WhatsApp message that she was at the airport. Didn’t he care at all?

As the car slowly entered the city, Adrian glanced back at her. “Why don’t you stay at my place for a couple of days? My father is in the provincial capital, and the city has already activated an extreme weather emergency plan. I have to go to my shift, and it’ll be more convenient for you to visit Auntie Agnes at the hospital.”

“I’ll stay at the ‘Joyful Inn,’” she stated, naming a hotel.

It was far from Stark's house and not close to the hospital where Agnes was staying.

Adrian fell silent in frustration.

Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of the Joyful Inn. Located in the eastern district of Lycheeville, it was a distance away from the city center and lacked an underground parking lot.

Adrian got out a split second before Evelyn, helping her retrieve her suitcase from the back.

The snow fell gently from the sky, blanketing everything in thick white, while the streetlights hung low, casting a warm yellow glow around them.

As their eyes met for a brief moment, a girl nearby, holding a camera, was captivated by the scene and hurriedly snapped a photo.

What a stunning couple!

The man radiated deep affection but wore a restrained expression; the woman’s eyes reflected determination and distance.

Though neither of them spoke, it felt as if everything had been said.

Unaware that they had been secretly photographed, Evelyn snatched the suitcase from Adrian’s hands and firmly dismissed him.

Adrian had intended to help her check in, but his phone rang with an urgent call from his superior, reminding him to return to his post. Reluctantly, he got back into the car and headed back to the office.

Evelyn booked a standard room and, after locking the door behind her, took a hot shower.

The first thing she did after picking up her phone was check for missed calls or WhatsApp messages from Jason. Once again, she felt disappointment wash over her.

She cursed herself for not learning her lesson, for still caring about that jerk!

During their marriage, she believed she had done enough, reporting what needed to be reported. What Jason thought or felt didn’t matter anymore.

Lying in this city, which felt both familiar and foreign, she couldn’t fall asleep.

She turned off the lights, pulled back one side of the curtain, and gazed out at the white world, as memories of the past surged in her heart…

That night, she tossed and turned, and by the time she opened her eyes the next morning, it was already 10:30 AM.

There were several missed calls on her phone from an unregistered number, likely Adrian’s secondary number, but she ignored them.

Three years ago, she had blocked all of Adrian’s contact information, and to this day, she had no intention of lifting that ban.

Agnes called, but her tone was unfriendly, and within two minutes, the conversation ended.

The snow continued to fall without any signs of stopping, blanketing the entire city in white. Aside from snowplows and sanitation workers, there were hardly any pedestrians on the streets.

News about the airport in Lycheeville being paralyzed due to the snowstorm was trending!

At three in the morning, there had been a severe electrical failure at the airport, and repairs were underway, but when power would be restored was still uncertain.

With power outages and roads covered in snow, rescue supplies couldn’t be delivered, and even hot water and instant noodles were running low at the airport.

Evelyn felt a chill of fear.

Fortunately, she had gone back to the city with Adrian last night.

Approaching noon, she got dressed and prepared to go to the hotel’s rooftop restaurant for lunch.

Just then, her phone rang again.

Thinking it was Adrian’s secondary number, she glanced at the screen carelessly, only to find it was Jason!

As she swiped to answer, her voice trembled, “Hello?”

“Open the door.”

Jason’s weary voice carried an air of authority.

“I—” Her mind exploded in confusion. “You’re in Lycheeville?”

Jason hung up, followed by slow, deliberate knocks on the door.

She hurried to twist the doorknob open!

A weary yet handsome face greeted her.

“Jason,” she murmured, his name spilling from her lips as a wave of emotions rushed over her, leaving her momentarily speechless.

The man, usually attentive to his appearance, had his black and white jacket and trousers splattered with mud.

“Are you blocking the door because someone’s inside?” Jason's unromantic words shattered the feelings that had just begun to bloom in her heart.

Her expression dimmed as she stepped aside, allowing him in.

As Jason walked into the room, he left a puddle of water on the floor. Evelyn bent down to check, only to discover that his shoes were completely soaked!
