Chapter 2 The Differences in Love That Left Her Covered in Wounds

Yasmin gathered herself, quickly tidied up, and soon arrived at the hospital.

Just as she stepped through the maternity ward door, the fragile composure she had managed to collect shattered once more.

She saw Caleb, holding Hailey in his arms, walking toward the examination room.

The man’s face was a mix of panic and concern, comforting her as they walked. “Don’t be afraid, Hailey, I’m here.”

His voice was as gentle as she had never heard before. Caleb had never spoken a kind word to her like that.

This scene was blindingly painful, as though her heart was being carved out by a knife. Knowing he loved Hailey was one thing, but seeing it with her own eyes was something else entirely.

Her hands dropped to her sides, and she clenched them so tightly her nails nearly dug into her skin, but she didn’t feel any pain.

Yasmin tried to take a step forward but felt as if her limbs were made of lead, too heavy to move.

“Director Jenkins, you’re here! What are you doing just standing there?” A colleague rushed over to her, urgently explaining the situation.

“The pregnant woman fell and has been bleeding. The pregnancy is unstable, and she has congenital heart disease. She’s allergic to some medications, so many can’t be used... her case is really complicated.”

As she spoke, the colleague pulled Yasmin toward the examination room. “Her husband’s been looking so anxious. His face is all dark and grim. He specifically requested the best doctor at our hospital. I’m afraid he might say that if we can’t save the baby, he’ll want us all to take the blame.”

Yasmin’s face turned pale as she listened, emotions creeping up in her chest—bitterness mixed with irony. Her husband? Whose husband was he?

Maybe it’s the unloved one who is the mistress.

She pushed open the door to the examination room and saw Caleb’s gaze fixed on Hailey’s face, the emotion in his eyes an unspoken mix of tenderness and sorrow.

“I’ve got the general picture,” Yasmin said as she walked past Caleb, heading straight to Hailey.

Caleb’s expression remained calm, not even bothering to look up at her. There wasn’t the slightest trace of awkwardness or guilt for being caught.

Yasmin thought, not only Hailey—at this point, she herself was starting to wonder if she was even his wife.

She began to examine Hailey. “Does your stomach hurt?”

Hailey, lying on the bed, looked soft and fragile, as though she could break at any moment.

“It hurts a little, but it’s not too bad.”

“Did you eat anything cold today?”

“Not that I remember...” Hailey bit her lip. “I don’t really remember what I ate today.”

The silent man beside her spoke up. “She had lean meat and seafood porridge for breakfast, pork bone soup, and for lunch, crucian carp soup with organic vegetables. Tonight, it was chicken soup and corn ribs, followed by mango for dessert.”

Yasmin stiffened slightly and looked at Caleb in disbelief.

He didn’t even remember when her birthday was, and yet, on that very day, he publicly announced Hailey as his girlfriend.

But now, he knew every detail of Hailey’s routine—attentive and considerate in a way that made Yasmin’s heart ache.

Her hands clenched tightly, and everything around her felt like needles stabbing into her heart. The difference between being loved and not... it was so painfully clear.

Caleb looked at Yasmin. “Doctor, is there something wrong with the food she ate?”

She was examining his girlfriend’s pregnancy while her husband acted as though he didn’t even know her.

The cold, distant look in his eyes and the atmosphere around them felt suffocating. Yasmin could hardly breathe, her hands and feet starting to freeze, her heart aching with each breath.

She turned her gaze away, took a deep breath. “No.”

Her body felt unnaturally cold, her slender frame straightening with a rigidity that only increased the pressure in her chest. After a long pause, she spoke again. “Family members, please step out. I need to examine the patient.”

“Is there any examination I can’t watch?” Caleb’s eyes were cold, his tone flat. His gaze felt like a sharp blade, piercing her heart.
