Chapter 3 A Heart Laid Bare Is Still Not Enough

Yasmin tightened her grip, averting her gaze. "I'm sorry, but please step outside. It's the hospital's policy."

"Policy?" Caleb's voice dropped coldly, and while others might not have caught the tone, she did. There was a faint, almost imperceptible threat in his words. "Hailey is pregnant and injured. I can’t leave her side."

Yasmin understood what he was implying. He was worried that she might harm Hailey or the baby out of jealousy. It was a complete insult to her professional ethics.

"Bro Caleb, it's fine. Don’t make things difficult for the doctor..." Hailey, still weak and delicate, tugged at Caleb’s sleeve, her voice sweet. She relished the attention. How could she not be happy, with the man she liked so concerned for her?

Caleb's demeanor softened instantly. "I'm just worried about you and the baby."

The matter was serious. Caleb didn't argue further, patting Hailey’s hand gently before offering a soothing smile. "I'll step outside for a while and come back to check on you later."

Yasmin lowered her eyes, suppressing the emotions surging within her, not wanting to look at their intimate moment.

The examination didn’t take long. Hailey’s baby seemed stable, with no signs of bleeding. Rest and regular check-ups were recommended for the time being.

Caleb wasn’t satisfied. He insisted firmly, his tone commanding. "This is serious. You need to admit her."

Hailey, still looking somewhat bashful, protested softly. "But the doctor said everything is fine. Don’t you think admitting me is a bit overboard?"

Caleb furrowed his brow, his focus entirely on Hailey. "When it comes to your safety and the baby's, nothing is too trivial. I’ll listen to anything you say, but on this, you need to listen to me, okay?"

Yasmin said nothing. She didn’t have the strength or the will to confront him. He was doing an excellent job of protecting his girlfriend’s innocence.

Her heart ached as she watched them, the sight of their love making her feel like a stranger in her own life. The years she had spent with Caleb—heart, mind, and soul—meant nothing compared to the few months he had known Hailey.

Yasmin exhaled sharply and signaled to a nurse. "Chelsea, please arrange a bed for Miss Sutton."

Chelsea responded promptly. "Got it, Director Jenkins."

As Yasmin left, Hailey immediately started chattering away, as if she couldn’t hold back her excitement.

"Bro Caleb, did you know? The Director Jenkins just now is amazing! She's a doctoral supervisor at Hawthorne Medical Academy. I heard she has dual degrees, and she was directly admitted to the program. She was even on par with Marcus Zeppelin. They were considered a golden couple, and everyone in the medical field looks up to them. They’re basically the role models for all medical students."

Hailey gushed with admiration, not noticing the change in Caleb’s expression.

"Bro Caleb, why are you silent?"

He smiled softly. "She’s just average, in my eyes. But you, you’re the best. I’m going to get your admission sorted now."

Hailey blushed. "You’re teasing me. She has dual medical degrees. How could I ever compare to her..."

Yasmin hadn't gone home the night before; she stayed in the hospital.

Around 6 a.m., just after she woke up, there was a knock at her door. When she opened it, Hailey stood there, a bright smile on her face.

"I hope I’m not disturbing you," Hailey said cheerfully. "I just wanted to thank you for staying late last night to help. I brought you some breakfast as a token of my appreciation."

The young woman’s smile was innocent, her words filled with the untainted air of youth—something Yasmin herself no longer possessed.

That innocence, the very thing that could drive men wild, was no surprise to Yasmin. It was easy to see why Caleb was so taken with her.

Yasmin didn’t have the habit of accepting food from patients.

Before she could politely decline, Hailey continued, almost without pause. "You can’t turn me down! This was made by my boyfriend first thing this morning. It’d be a shame to waste it."

The mention of "boyfriend" froze Yasmin in her tracks.
