Chapter 7 Standing Up for Her

A harsh and cold voice came from above, and Yasmin looked up to meet Caleb's dark and icy gaze. It was a familiar look, one Caleb reserved for her, and this time it carried an air of impatience. No matter when, he was always focused on Hailey's emotions.

Yasmin took a deep breath, suppressing the discomfort in her chest, and forced a smile. "In this day and age, does the mistress have the right to feel jealous too?"

Caleb furrowed his brows, clearly upset by her use of the word "mistress." "Yasmin, she's a good girl. Don't insult her."

Yasmin’s fingers tightened into a fist, ready to say something more.

"Why are you all standing by the door?" Director Zander from the Human Resources Department suddenly walked in, interrupting them.

With a smile, he said, "Let's all go inside. I have an announcement to make."

Once they entered the office, Director Zander got straight to the point.

"I'm sure you've all heard the news. The spots for the hospital’s advanced training program have been decided. We have a new member joining, so please take good care of her," Director Zander said, waving at Hailey. "Doctor Sutton, please introduce yourself."

Hailey, still young and shy, nervously spoke in a soft voice, "My name is Hailey. I'm a senior student at Hawthorne Medical Academy. I hope everyone will take good care of me."

As soon as she finished speaking, the doctors in the office burst into a flurry of whispers.

The advanced training program was a rare opportunity—one that could lead to promotions or credits toward further education. Normally, the candidates were selected by the hospital and their employers, with at least 3-5 years of work experience required. But Hailey was just a student. How could she possibly qualify? The hospital couldn’t be a joke.

Yasmin was also taken aback. She hadn’t expected Caleb to secure such a high position for Hailey right from the start.

"When did St. Mary’s Hospital lower its standards so much? Anyone can get in now," one of the doctors grumbled. Everyone else had worked hard to earn their positions, so seeing someone so unqualified take up a spot felt unfair.

Hailey’s face flushed with embarrassment at the harsh comments. At such a young age, she couldn’t handle the criticism. She stood there, helpless, her hands nervously twisting together.

"The advanced training spots aren’t only for those with excellent grades. There are other channels," Caleb said, walking over to Hailey’s side. He took the young woman’s hand and patted it gently, both comforting and protecting her.

Yasmin turned her gaze away, feeling a tightness in her chest as she watched her husband showering care and affection on the other woman, while remaining coldly distant with her. Her heart felt heavy.

Caleb continued, his voice calm, "For example, those who have made significant contributions to the hospital. Hailey has donated four imported medical devices worth two hundred million. If any of you can manage that, you may also use this green channel."

Yasmin froze, realizing that the hospital had this policy in place.

In that moment, she felt a chill run through her body. Her husband had spent extravagantly for Hailey’s birthday, and now he was splurging two hundred million to secure Hailey a spot in the hospital’s advanced training program. Meanwhile, Yasmin, his legitimate wife of five years, had probably never even seen a fraction of that amount spent on her. It made her feel like a fool. The bitterness in her heart coiled tightly, like vines creeping upward.

Hailey bit her lip, looking at Caleb with grateful eyes, her expression full of innocence and vulnerability. She looked so pitiful that even women felt sorry for her, let alone men.

With Caleb's words, the office fell silent. Money and connections could buy resumes, and no one could argue with that.

Caleb wrapped his arm around Hailey's shoulders in a protective gesture, as if to show everyone his care for his girlfriend. "Today is Hailey’s first day at work. She’s a newcomer, so please take care of her. After work tonight, I’ll treat everyone to dinner at Misty Mountain Restaurant. I’ll arrange transportation for everyone."
