Our anniversary dinner got pushed aside, making the crystal glasses clink.
"I'll get you something even better."
His voice got all husky - the way that usually made me weak in the knees.
"Let me make tonight up to you, right now."
My heart was pounding.
I wanted to just come out and ask him - did you give that bracelet to another woman?
Are you lying to my face right now? But I couldn't get the words out.
Maybe I was too scared of what he'd say.
Before I could find my courage, his fingers traced up my thigh, making me shiver even though I didn't want to.
"Your body knows what it wants, Sophia."
His touch was so familiar, making me respond in ways I couldn't control.
As he kissed me deeply and started unbuttoning my dress, reality hit me like a splash of cold water.
The baby. Our baby. He still doesn't know!
"Richard, wait..." I tried to say, but then his lips found that spot on my neck.
"Mmm..." A moan escaped before I could stop it, my body automatically arching toward him.
"You're incredible," Richard murmured, his kisses trailing fire across my collarbone.
The intimacy of the moment made my head spin, pleasure warring with the nagging doubts in my mind.
"So beautiful," he breathed, his eyes darkening as he undressed me with practiced care.
"You drive me crazy, Sophia."
My cheeks flushed at being so exposed on our dining room table.
This was crazy - and so unlike me.
But Richard had always had this effect on me, making me forget everything else.
Just as his kisses grew more intense, reality crashed back in.
The doctor's warning from earlier flashed through my mind.
"Wait," I gasped, placing my hand on his chest.
"I'm not feeling well. We need to stop."
The doctor had been very clear - at just over a month pregnant, our little one was still vulnerable.
No risky behavior, she'd said. Including this.
Richard pulled back immediately, concern replacing desire.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" His fingers gentle now as they brushed my hair back.
"Just tired," I managed, the lie bitter on my tongue.
I couldn't tell him about the baby. Not yet.
Not until I knew the truth about that bracelet and the woman wearing it.
If he was faithful, we could be the family I'd always dreamed of. But if he was cheating...
He didn't deserve to know about our child.
"I should've thought - you waited up so long,"
Richard said, helping me dress with tender care before carrying me to the kitchen chair.
"You must be starving."
I shook my head, my appetite long gone after hours of waiting and worrying.
"Let me make you something light."
He rolled up his sleeves, looking devastatingly handsome as he moved around our kitchen with easy confidence.
Watching him cook, I couldn't help wondering - did he do this for her too? The thought made me sick.
Take a breath, Sophia. Maybe there's an explanation.
