Chapter 6

A week ago, Susan in Richard's passenger seat wouldn't have bothered me.

But now?

That seat - the one Richard always said was "just for my wife" - felt like a slap in the face.

"We're all going to Grandpa's party," Susan explained sweetly.

"My car broke down, so Richard offered a ride. You don't mind, right, Sophia? You're always so understanding."

I wanted to say yes, I did mind. Instead, I bit my tongue.

Speaking up would only make me look like the jealous wife - and wasn't she just his stepsister?

Richard handed the keys to Jack, his driver, and led me to the back seat.

The drive was quiet, with Richard holding my hand, but the tension was thick enough to cut.

Susan kept glancing back, her expression souring at our joined hands.

"Sophia, why aren't you wearing that bracelet?"

"Got bored of it," I said flatly. "Just another piece of jewelry."

"A two-million-dollar piece," she shot back.

I laughed softly. Was she really trying to brag about Richard's expensive gift to her?

"That's pocket change for Richard."

"Exactly," Richard chimed in. "Next time I'll get you something even better, Sophia."

"Wow, the rumors are true - you really do spoil your wife," Susan forced out a laugh that didn't reach her eyes.

Even with Richard defending me, something felt off.

Susan's feelings for him were clearly more than sisterly.

She kept chattering away: "Remember that strawberry ice cream place I loved, Richard? Miles away, huge lines. You ran all that way and waited for hours. It was melted by the time you got back!"

They both laughed, and my stomach turned to ice. Richard must have felt me tense because he squeezed my hand.

"Ancient history," he said quickly.

"Sorry, Sophia - just old memories," Susan added, not sounding sorry at all.

"She doesn't think before she speaks," Richard explained lamely.

I pulled my hand free.

Had these same hands touched Susan?

No matter what he said, I couldn't shake my doubts anymore.

He'd never run across town or waited hours for my ice cream.

I thought only couples crazy in love did things like that.

Maybe the moon I'd been reaching for had already been caught by someone else.

We pulled up to the estate, driving past manicured gardens to the main house.

As we got out, Susan suddenly cried out, stumbling dramatically.

Richard caught her instantly - pure reflex.

She fell against his chest, moaning in pain but somehow managing to shoot me a look.

"What happened?" Richard asked, helping her up.

"My ankle again," she whimpered, gazing up at him with teary eyes.

I turned away, my nails digging into my palms. I'd seen enough.
