“What is this?” I ask.

“Well, open it,” Calvin says.

I pull a box from the paper bag. It’s a fancy Cartier box, dark red with gold edges. I open it and see a beautiful jade necklace inside. The jade is a deep green, and the design is simple but elegant.

“Calvin, this is too much. I can’t take this,” I say, offering the gift back to him. “I really don’t want anything in return.”
