Ethan Shaw searched the car for something to block Vivienne Brooks' chest, rummaging through the interior.
Vivienne Brooks pointed to the glove compartment. "There should be a reflective vest in there."
Following her direction, Ethan Shaw grabbed a yellow reflective vest and immediately handed it to Vivienne Brooks.
When he turned around, he found Vivienne Brooks was staring at him intently.
His hair was damp, sticking to his face. His clear, shy eyes were lively, and his well-defined features made him look much younger than his age.
"What are you looking at?" Ethan Shaw asked with a playful smile.
Vivienne Brooks raised an eyebrow, her gaze almost challenging, as if saying, I’ve already seen everything.
Ethan Shaw pretended not to understand the meaning behind her look and joked, "We might catch a cold at this rate."
"Come to my place and change," Vivienne Brooks said as she started the car, "It’s less than a kilometer away."
Ethan Shaw hesitated but thought better of refusing. His home was 20 kilometers away, and if he waited until he got there, he might actually catch a cold. So, he agreed.
However, Ethan soon realized that this was a mistake. He was wearing a shirt and long pants, and though Vivienne Brooks gave him a loose unisex T-shirt to wear, there were no men's pants for him to change into.
"You have two options," Vivienne Brooks said, "You can take it off, and I’ll throw it in the dryer for you, or you can dry yourself with a hairdryer."
Ethan Shaw opted for the hairdryer. He wasn’t ready to strip down in front of a woman he had barely met.
After Vivienne Brooks changed into her clothes, she took the hairdryer from him and said, "I’ll do your back for you. Just be careful not to burn yourself."
As the warm air flowed from the hairdryer, their bodies inched closer to each other. Every time Vivienne Brooks brushed against his skin, Ethan Shaw instinctively moved away toward the wall. But as he continued to move, she suddenly leaned in and whispered in his ear, "What are you hiding from? It’s not like I haven’t touched you before."
Ethan Shaw blushed and his heart raced. He had no idea how to react. Though he was 29, his experience with relationships was minimal, and he wasn’t prepared for anything like a one-night stand.
"I think the air is a bit too hot," Ethan Shaw found an excuse to avoid the tension.
Vivienne Brooks switched the dryer to cool air. "How about now?"
"A bit cold," Ethan Shaw shivered slightly.
Vivienne Brooks switched it back to warm air, continuing to blow it on him, her gaze still intense and unwavering.
Soon, Vivienne Brooks kissed him. The moment their lips touched, Ethan Shaw’s body burned, and he froze, unable to move. The situation was far beyond what he had expected.
When Vivienne Brooks reached to undo his shirt, he struggled to control his growing desire and pushed her away.
"I need to go home. My clothes are fine now," Ethan Shaw said firmly.
He quickly made his way toward the door.
On the drive home, the two were silent. The atmosphere in the car felt thick and suffocating. Ethan Shaw felt like he might suffocate in the confined space.
Vivienne Brooks dropped Ethan Shaw off downstairs. Ethan waved goodbye and returned home. As soon as Ethan stepped inside, Lucy Archer approached him angrily.
"Where have you been this late? You didn’t go to work during the day and now you come back in the middle of the night. Are you misbehaving?" Lucy snapped.
"Mom, I’m twenty-nine. Do I have to report everything to you?" Ethan Shaw said this for the first time.
"You’ve grown wings, huh? Don’t need me to care about you anymore, I’m just annoying now." Lucy seemed as if she were about to cry.
Seeing this, Ethan didn’t want to continue the argument. He ran to his room and locked the door. Outside, Lucy cried and yelled for over an hour before finally quieting down.
Ethan quietly made a decision. He was going to move out and find a job he liked. However, as Lucy had pointed out, finding a job he liked wasn’t easy.
The majority of the resumes Ethan sent out disappeared without a trace. Occasionally, some companies called him for an interview, but once they inquired about his work experience, they quickly lost interest.
Companies were very realistic and doubted his work capabilities since, despite graduating six years ago, he had remained a bank clerk without a promotion.
Ethan realized he had fallen into a deep pit. The more he struggled, the deeper he sank.
In desperation, he decided to go to his father, Alexander Shaw, hoping that he could help him find a suitable job.
Alexander Shaw was still warm toward him, but his stepmother, Marissa Blackwood Shaw, always gave him a cold shoulder.
"Dad, I quit my job at the bank. I want to find a job in an insurance company, securities firm, or financial institution. Do you have any friends who can help?" Ethan asked, still holding some hope.
Alexander Shaw glanced at him and replied, "I’ll ask around and let you know if I hear anything."
Ethan had planned to stay a bit longer, but when he saw his half-brother Jonathan Shaw getting up for the summer break, he didn’t want to linger any longer. He quickly said goodbye to Alexander Shaw.
Though Jonathan Shaw’s life was completely different from his own, this half-brother still resented him, fearing that Ethan might take away their father’s love.
As Ethan Shaw wandered aimlessly down the street, he received a call from Vivienne Brooks.
"Aren't you coming for your follow-up appointment today? Starting tomorrow, I’ll be attending an academic conference with my professor, and you won’t be able to get an appointment with me," Vivienne Brooks said on the phone.
It was only then that Ethan remembered he still had to go for his check-up. Lately, after following Vivienne's treatment plan, he no longer felt any discomfort. He had been so focused on job hunting that he had forgotten about it.
"Can I still make it there in time?" Ethan asked.
"I'll wait for you," she replied.
When Ethan rushed into Vivienne’s office, it was already the hospital's lunch break.
"Sorry, Dr. Brooks, I'm late," Ethan said, panting.
Vivienne didn’t bother with pleasantries. She asked him a few questions and handed him a routine urine test form.
"If this urine test comes back normal, you can stop the medication, and you won’t need any more follow-ups," Vivienne said.
"Okay, thanks," Ethan said happily. The disease that had been tormenting him like a nightmare was finally about to end.
"There are a few things you need to pay attention to," Vivienne continued seriously. "Drink plenty of water, don't hold in your urine, or it might relapse. Also, take care of personal hygiene and hygiene during sexual activity."
Ethan’s face turned bright red, and he felt his skin burning with embarrassment. He thought to himself that ordinary people could never compare to doctors. They seemed so calm, no matter what they said.
Vivienne noticed his awkwardness and deliberately added, "Both parties should pay attention to hygiene."
Ethan wiped his forehead, trying to ease the discomfort. "Got it, thanks, Dr. Brooks."
After what had nearly happened between them at Vivienne's place, Ethan was even more determined to keep his distance from her. As soon as the consultation ended, he hurried to leave.
Vivienne saw through him and immediately called out.
"How about we go to a concert together after I return from the conference?" Vivienne said, walking toward him.
Ethan took a few steps back and opened the door to the office. "I’m not interested. I’m allergic to classical music. I’m a totally uncultured person," he said, trying to deflect the situation.
