Chapter 16

I stood up, but as soon as I opened the door, a group of people shoved me aside, nearly causing me to fall.

When I looked closely, I saw that two elderly people had appeared at the door. They spotted Sarah sitting on the sofa, drinking water, and immediately shouted, “What were you thinking?! If you want a divorce, why didn’t you just come to us? How could you even think of killing yourself?!”

As soon as she finished speaking, the elderly woman threw herself at Sarah, sobbing uncontrollably. Beside her, the man who seemed to be Sarah’s father stood silently, his eyes red with emotion.

Could these be... Sarah’s parents?

I stood there, stunned, unsure of what to say. Just then, the man who looked like her father walked over to me. “You’re Sarah’s friend, right? We really owe you this time.”

“Please, don’t mention it...” I nodded hurriedly.

He let out a long, heavy sigh, gazing at the mother and daughter clinging to each other in tears. In a low voice, he said, “Before, when Sarah was talking about divorce, I thought she was just being impulsive and didn’t take it seriously. But now that she’s even gone as far as trying to take her own life, no matter the reason, this marriage has to end.”

I quickly hid the bottle of hangover pills behind me, making sure that Sarah’s father wouldn’t see it.

Looking at Sarah, who was now cuddling up to her mother like a child, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. I decided that the next time I visited her place, I’d have to properly thank that old lady landlord.

Although the process had been a bit convoluted, after a peaceful family meal, I felt that this unexpected “surprise” was worth it.

Now, all that was left to deal with was Marcus.

I had thought that, being the smart and composed person he usually was, Marcus would have handed over the memory cards early on.
