Chapter 20

First, he claimed that he was drunk that night and didn’t even know how he ended up hugging Sarah. Then he said Marcus had also threatened him, warning that if he didn’t cooperate, his own secrets would be exposed.

I didn’t have the energy to figure out which details were true or false, but as long as he was useful, I’d use him.

Before I met with Marcus, I had already instructed Tyler to stay on standby and keep the phone line open, so I could get the location of the memory cards during the conversation.

Seeing that I had everything under control, Marcus quickly changed his tune. “Ms. Anderson, it was all Tyler’s idea! I never intended to blackmail you guys!”

I had no interest in hearing more of his excuses and attempts to shift the blame.

After I got the memory cards, Sarah and I immediately snapped them and tossed them into the trash.

With everything settled, although Marcus wouldn’t face any punishment, I was satisfied with the outcome.

Sarah, however, was a bit dissatisfied, muttering, “These days, men are getting more and more untrustworthy.”

I couldn’t help but laugh a little and asked, “And are you that trustworthy?”

She paused for a moment, then curled her lips into a smile. “Fair enough. Good thing I’m already divorced. Next time I fall in love, I’ll make sure it’s with someone normal, someone I actually like.”

Hearing this, I blinked but didn’t comment.

If Sarah and her parents had thought this way from the start, maybe so many things wouldn’t have happened.

But now, there’s still a chance.

I looked at the framed photo on the table. In the picture, a man—both familiar and distant—had his arm around my shoulder, smiling at the camera.
