Chapter 6

She thought too highly of herself. In her mind, only Ethan, the top student in our school, was good enough for her.

But Ethan and I were the school's power couple. We were childhood sweethearts from similar backgrounds, and we were neck and neck in our studies.

That's why Lily saw me as her rival.

If I entered the campus singing contest, she'd sign up too.

If I joined the French speech competition, she'd be right there with me.

Heck, when I signed up for the 800-meter race at the school sports meet, she went overboard and registered for the 5-mile endurance run, totally ignoring her physical limits.

But looking at the results, it was clear she had no clue about her own abilities.

In the singing contest, she was totally tone-deaf and sounded awful.

For the French speech, her broken French and weird accent landed her dead last.

The endurance run? She face-planted on the track, passing out from low blood sugar and exhaustion.

That year, the photo of her epic face-plant was the hottest meme on the school forum.

Every time she tried to one-up me, she ended up making a fool of herself.

This made her hate me even more. Whenever she saw me, she'd stick her nose so high in the air, you'd think she was trying to smell the clouds. She even started disliking Ethan because of it.

I guess that's what they call "a fine line between love and hate," but honestly, I never got it.

After high school, I didn't see her again. No surprise there - she couldn't get into my college.

But seeing her now, it's like she's a whole different person.

She looks way more polished, and you can tell the entertainment industry has toughened her up. She seems a lot more poised than she used to be.

To keep a low profile, I changed into the baggy clothes I'd prepared earlier, which hid my slender figure.

With a face mask, hat, and thick-framed glasses on, I bet even Ethan wouldn't recognize me.
