Chapter 11

I freak, thinking he's hurt, but nope – he's just tangled up in that vest.

The little goofball must've been zooming around solo, got a leg stuck through the neck hole, and turned himself into a tripod cat. No wonder he's stumbling around.

I'm dying laughing, whipping out my phone for a pic.

Happy looks at me like I've betrayed him.

We're both so caught up in this photo op at the door, we don't hear Noah coming in. He barges in hard, the door smacks me and bounces back.

Happy and I both yelp. He scampers off on his three good legs, and I'm hunched over, holding my head.

Noah freaks, grabbing my hand to check the damage.

For some reason, I flash back to Jessica pushing drinks on me, and I just lose it. I shove Noah away.

"This is your fault. I waited forever for you."

Noah's all flustered. "My bad, my bad. Let me see where you're hurt."

"Leave me alone!"

"How can I leave you alone?"

I look up, teary-eyed. "Now you're yelling at me. It hurts!"

Noah looks guilty as sin. "No yelling, no yelling. I'm sorry. Let me take a look."

I move my hand, and Noah checks the spot, parting my hair and blowing on it. "Where'd it hit you?"

I sniffle. "My butt. I was bent over taking Happy's picture when you opened the door."

"Then why are you holding your head..." Noah reaches to rub my behind, then stops mid-air.

I pout at him. He scoops me up and plops me on the couch, looking stressed. "So... what do we do now?"

He's fidgeting. Can't rub it, can't look at it. The big shot's totally stumped.

I clutch my backside. "It's all your fault!"

"Yes, yes, it's my fault. Still hurting?"

I nod, then shake my head.

Happy's standing off to the side on his three working legs, looking at us like we've lost our minds. If cats could talk, he'd be cussing us out.

Noah finally follows my gaze and spots his son's predicament.
