Chapter 9

I tried my best to calm her down, tolerating her irrational behavior and trying not to upset her further.

I'd been there myself - blaming others when I was the one who messed up.

When she finally calmed down, I tried explaining the pros and cons of different approaches, urging her to be rational. She nodded along.

I thought she understood, but boy was I wrong. Before she even recovered, she made sure Duke's wife found out about his cheating.

Her logic? "If I can't be happy, neither can they. Might as well go down together."

Because of Delilah's reveal, Duke's marriage fell apart too.

Duke called Delilah countless times, but she ignored him. So he called me instead.

I expected him to curse us out, but instead, he yelled something shocking - he had oligospermia (low sperm count), making it nearly impossible for him to get someone pregnant in one try. He suggested Delilah check whose baby it really was.

I froze, realizing this was way worse than any curse.

When Delilah heard this, she went nuts, demanding the doctors test the genetic material from the abortion. The results? It was actually her husband's baby!

When Delilah saw the results, she let out a piercing scream and fainted on the spot from the shock.

Goes to show when you're guilty, you automatically assume the worst and can't think straight.

After much hesitation, I decided to call Delilah's husband to try to salvage what was left of her reputation. I told him Delilah was actually a victim - she got drunk and was taken advantage of by Duke. That's why she was passed out downstairs that night and asked me to cover for her.

I blamed everything on Duke. When her husband learned the baby was his, he was already shocked and regretful. Hearing that Delilah was supposedly forced into it, his heart softened. He told me he still loved Delilah and planned to void the divorce papers.

I advised her husband that since Duke had already lost everything in his divorce, there was no need to go after him further. The CEO didn't respond - he just hung up.

I swallowed hard, hoping the CEO would stay calm and not do anything drastic. Otherwise, once Duke realized he'd been made a scapegoat, he'd come after both me and Delilah.

Sure enough, things went south with Duke.
