Chapter 12

With her unlimited shopping budget, she couldn't understand how much a thousand dollars meant to regular working people.

Her whole "modest and graceful" image was built on the backs of us working stiffs.

Just when things couldn't get worse, they did. One of Sunrise's major clients heard the rumors and decided to delay their payments.

With their cash flow cut off, Sunrise was heading straight for bankruptcy.

The unpaid employees started protesting outside the office with banners reading, "Sunrise Scumbags! Felix the Crook! Pay Us Now!"

Backed into a corner by creditors, Felix came crawling back to me.

He begged for my help, all humble now.

"Madeline, you handled a cash flow crisis at Sunrise before. You must know how to fix this. Money's no object!"

Look at that - still calling me Madeline even now.

I looked at him sympathetically and sighed. "Felix, it's not that I won't help - your company's just too far gone. Nobody can save it now."

Felix's face darkened when he heard me drop the formalities, but he swallowed his anger.

Forcing another smile, he said, "Ms. Hayes, I know you're still upset. Let me introduce you to someone - it might help clear the air."

He pulled out his phone and made a call.

A few minutes later, someone else showed up.

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw who it was.

Nina had been released from jail.

She shuffled reluctantly over to me, head down, silent.

Felix smacked her behind and snapped, "Get on with it!"

My eyes went wide.

Nina cleared her throat, looked up at me, and started, "Ms. Hayes, I was wrong before."

Then, taking a deep breath like she'd made up her mind, she suddenly slapped herself across the face!

Right there in front of everyone, she kept slapping herself back and forth while apologizing, "Ms. Hayes, I was out of my mind when I hit you. I'm paying it back double now. Please be the bigger person and forgive me..."

While she was slapping herself, Felix looked pained but didn't stop her, just watching me hopefully.

I held up my hand to stop her, looking at them both in surprise.

"We can deal with the past later. Right now, I'm more interested in... you two...?"

‘When did they get together?!’
