Chapter 3

Here's my localized American English translation:

"Dianne, why are you staring at me?" Jenny's sweet voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Nothing. The teacher just wanted to discuss early admission."

"Early admission?! Did you accept it?"

Jenny grabbed my shoulders with surprising strength for her small frame.

She looked unusually tense, her voice turning shrill.

Realizing her overreaction, Jenny released my shoulders.

"I... I didn't mean it like that," she flipped her hair casually, then leaned in close with a pleading voice.

"Dianne, you know I can't be without you. You promised to stay with me!"

I stepped back, creating distance.

"I turned down the offer."

Jenny sighed in relief, hugging me. "I'm sorry you had to do that, Dianne. I just can't bear being apart from you."

I pressed my lips together, staying silent.

The bell rang, and Jenny returned to her seat.

"The practice SATs are in two days. I need to study hard so I won't fall too far behind you."

She smiled sweetly.

"Dianne, we'll always be together, right?"

After the practice SATs...

Jenny rushed out of the testing room to ask me, "Dianne, did you think the test was hard?"

Her face was pale and covered in cold sweat.

She'd clearly struggled with it.

"I thought it was pretty challenging."

Jenny instantly looked relieved. "Me too."

She went out for a while and came back to find me explaining problems to Monica, our class president.

Jenny rudely bumped Monica aside and wrapped her arms around my shoulders, whining, "What's the deal, Dianne? Everyone else said the test was easy, but you said it was hard."

Before I could respond, Monica spoke up: "Jenny, don't you have a brain of your own? Can't you tell if a test is easy or hard? Why do you need to ask?"

Jenny seemed exposed for a moment, flashing anger before returning to her pitiful act: "Why are you being so mean? I only said that because hearing Dianne say it was easy affected my judgment."

At school, Jenny and I were known as the academic power twins.

Every test, I'd rank first, and Jenny would rank sixth.

No matter who filled the spots between us, our positions never changed.

Monica watched Jenny leave, then lowered her voice,

"Dianne, I've wanted to tell you something for a while, but I was afraid you'd get upset."
