His whole demeanor changed, his voice cooling. "But you wanted it too..."
I cut him off, refusing to remember how I'd lost control.
"Stop. Focus on making things work with Clair. That's what matters."
Tom stared at me stubbornly, wanting to say more, but finally held his tongue.
There was no way we could share a bed tonight.
I pulled out some extra sheets and blankets from the bottom drawer, making him a bed on the floor.
"You're sleeping down here tonight. Goodnight." I didn't wait for his response, just turned off the light and rolled over, facing away from him.
I tossed and turned all night - something I hadn't done in ages.
The next morning, I was up before my alarm. After changing in the bathroom, I snuck out of the room.
I immediately booked another room at the front desk - thankfully someone had just checked out.
After that night, I noticed something different in the way Tom looked at me, so I made sure to keep my distance.
For the rest of our week in Thailand, I barely left my room, giving him no chance to get close.
When we finally met at the airport to fly home, I saw the frustration on his face, and knew I'd made the right choice.
Hours later, we were back on our own country.
The trip hadn't relaxed me at all. Instead, I'd gained a heavy new worry - something might be wrong between my sister and her husband.
At the airport, I spotted Clair waiting for us - still the same sweet young woman I remembered, wearing her usual warm smile.
"Sis, I missed you so much!" She threw herself into my arms, hugging my waist tight.
I patted her shoulder affectionately. "Aren't you too old for this?"
Tom teased from beside us, "Don't I get any love?"
Clair pouted, burying her face in my shoulder. "Nope!"
Looking at my sweet, innocent sister reminded me how close I'd come to making an unforgivable mistake.
I promised myself to be an even better sister from now on.
I'd used my vacation days for the Thailand trip, so I came back to mountains of work. I barely had time to breathe.
Staying busy helped push those uncomfortable memories from Thailand to the back of my mind.
This was exactly the kind of life I wanted.
