"Fine, I'll talk. Just don't call the police."
What he told me made me feel like I was hearing about complete strangers.
His bizarre behavior tonight - and even that Thailand trip - was all orchestrated by Clair.
Her goal? To push Tom into my arms.
Who does that? What kind of woman tries to give her husband to someone else - especially her own sister?
As I stared at him in disbelief, he continued.
The truth was, Clair had always been in love with someone else. Marrying Tom was just part of her plan.
The person she really loved was Ben - my ex-husband.
Even before my divorce, she'd been visiting our house under the pretense of seeing me, creating opportunities to be alone with Ben.
During that time, when Ben and I were having problems - with me being the cold, career-focused wife and Clair playing the sweet, understanding sister - Ben gradually fell for her. They started having an affair.
Tom caught them together one time when he came home early. Furious, he immediately wanted a divorce.
This whole scheme was Clair's way of making it up to him, begging for forgiveness.
"I don't believe you."
"I grew up with Clair. Nobody knows her better than me. She would never do this!"
The person he described wasn't my sister. Not only was she having an affair with my ex-husband, but she was trying to use me as a bargaining chip to make up for her betrayal.
I couldn't accept it.
Maybe this was just his story to justify his actions. How could I doubt my own sister based on someone else's words?
"Check my phone. All the chat records are there."
I eyed him suspiciously, then took his phone and started scrolling through their messages.
"She left the office. Get in position!"
"On it."
These were from tonight.
Then messages from the day before the Thailand trip:
"Have you decided how to make it up to me?"
"I'll give you my sister."
"Aren't you two close? How can you just offer her up like that?"
"We're fake sisters. I've hated her for a long time."
"She always took everything from me when we were kids. I couldn't fight back then, but things are different now. I can take what I want!"
