Chapter 11

For the sake of our sisterhood, I suppressed my anger.

"Can you tell me why?"

Claire shot an angry glare at Tom behind her, then snapped impatiently, "Hasn't Tom already told you everything?"

I gripped my fists tighter. "I want to hear it from you."

She let out a mocking laugh, her poisonous gaze piercing through me. She tossed her bag on the couch and started listing all her grievances over the years.

"Everyone says we're sisters, but who knows how you've always worked against me!"

"All my life, I never got a single word of praise or approval from you! Whatever I liked, you'd have it the next minute. I was always left with nothing!"

I tried to speak but couldn't get a word in.

Claire kept going, "Sure, my grades weren't as good as yours, I'm not as smart, didn't go to fancy schools like you did. So what? I've always lived in your shadow. Everyone decided you were the successful daughter, while I was just the pretty face who couldn't do anything right!"

She screamed through her tears.

"And Ben - I met him first! Why did you get to be his wife and not me?"

After unleashing years of pent-up resentment, she seemed relieved, standing there looking down at me.

Then she delivered the coldest blow.

"I want to destroy you."

"If you weren't around, Mom and Dad would finally see me."

Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. I couldn't move, drowning in endless sorrow. Tears streamed down my face as my shoulders shook. I covered my face, trying to hide my vulnerability.

I'd finally heard Claire's verdict on me, and realized how twisted and dark her mind had become over the years.

And only now did I learn that she'd known Ben before me.
