Chapter 1 The Mysterious Call

I was preparing a meal for my kid when I got a call from an unknown number. It was a woman who claimed she'd been watching me for a while. She said she wanted to talk to me about my husband.

At first, I thought it was a prank and hung up immediately. Less than a minute later, she sent me a photo. In the photo, my husband was wearing a suit and tie, with his arms around a slim woman.

I felt like my head was spinning. The egg beater dropped from my hand with a clatter. As I was still trying to compose myself, another call came in from the same number. "I'm the woman in the photo," she said. "Are you ready to hear me out now? I'll send you an address."

It hit me as I realized it. It was unbelievable. Could my husband be cheating on me? Tyler Jenkins had always been a conservative and family-oriented man. In all these years, he'd never taken photos with any woman except me. But the picture I was seeing right now was way over the line, for both of us.

Thirty minutes later, I drove to the address in the sports car Tyler gave me as a birthday gift the previous year. The meeting was at a coffee shop on the ground floor of the Financial District mall.

I had hardly parked outside when my phone started ringing. Before I got there, I had cropped the woman's photo and sent it to my friend who worked as a private investigator. He was the one calling back. Pretty efficient, it was not even half an hour yet. For him to be calling now, he must have dug up everything about her. I answered the call and asked him to email me the details. After ending the call, I sent him $500 as payment for his work.

As I walked into the coffee shop, I spotted the woman right away. She was young, beautiful, and her perfect skin was decked out in luxury brands from head to toe, she was hard to miss. I walked over with my trademark calmness and a slight smile. Before I could speak, she greeted me, "Hello, Mrs. Jenkins."

"Hello, Rachel," I ignored her outstretched hand and sat down across from her. "What did you want to discuss?"

Her hand hung in the air for a moment as if she was waiting for my handshake which never came. She reluctantly gave up, but she didn't seem embarrassed. She smoothly pulled her hand back and settled into her seat.

"About your husband," she said, going straight to the point as she stirred her coffee with a silver spoon. After a few soft clinks, she continued, "You haven't been intimate with him for a while, right? And he's been traveling a lot these past six months?"

"Many people are tracking his movements, his assistant, his competitors. The photo I sent to you was taken eight months ago at the annual IT industry conference. All the big shots were there. I picked out his suit and tied his tie myself. The event ended at 11:15 PM and I picked him up in my car outside the venue."

I gave her a quick glance. "What are you trying to say? That the two of you spent the night together?"

"Oh, we spent many nights together. Not just that night. When he told me that you are keeping him on a tight leash and picking him up from events, I decided to meet him the next day. To be honest, when I first hooked up with him, it was pure physical attraction. I was totally captivated by his looks. We did not just click in bed, but in every other way too."

Hearing each of her words made me feel like a knife was cutting through my heart. I never imagined that my thoughtful husband could turn out to be like this.

The pain in my chest made it hard for me to breathe. The lady, Rachel, kept taunting me, "You haven't talked with him for some time, right? Meanwhile, I am always chatting with him on Messenger every night until dawn." She opened the messaging app and showed it to me.
