Chapter 5 Knowing The Enemy

Throughout the forty-minute drive home, I kept fighting to stop myself from shedding tears.

After we got home, I commenced our usual routine of making dinner for Danny, helping him with his homework, reading stories to him, bathing him and tucking him in bed.

As Danny was about to fall asleep, he cautiously asked, "Mommy, did you have a fight with Daddy?"

I had kept trying to act like everything was normal, but his innocent question broke me. My eyes started burning, but I still kept them wide as I didn't want him to worry. I kept taking deep breaths and I finally managed to say calmly, "We didn't fight, sweetie. We just had a disagreement."

Being a sensitive kid, he quickly figured it out. "Daddy must have made you angry."

"Don't worry about it, baby. Mommy will handle it," I hugged him close and hummed his bedtime song until he slept off.

As I saw his peaceful sleeping face, all my pain came back.

I managed to hold back my tears until I left his room. As I got out, the tears started falling heavily on the back of my hand. I leaned against his door and let out a long sigh. I was still wondering how my marriage had fallen apart so suddenly when my phone rang. I hurried away with it toward the master bedroom.

It was my junior colleague, Zachary Parker, calling. He is much younger than me. His voice always carried this sunny quality as he was still full of energy. "Hey, Tiger told me you were asking about Rachel Harrison this afternoon," he said brightly.

"Why does Tiger tell you everything? Are you two a thing or something?" I snapped out in anger.

"No, no, no! I'm straight, I'm straight!" Zachary quickly clarified. He then added, "Tiger's my go-to private investigator. He only tells me everything because he gets a lot of his info from me."

I didn't bother arguing about that with him. "Yeah, I looked her up. Tiger has already sent me the file. Why are you calling?"

"I know everything about her. You could've just asked me directly." Zachary paused dramatically and cleared his throat. After waiting for a while without getting any response from me, he continued, "Okay, fine. Rachel is the precious daughter of the President of Harrison & Associates."

Zachary's introduction was clear and simple. I didn't need to wade through the files anymore.

Rachel Harrison was the only daughter of Michael Harrison, founder of Harrison & Associates. She earned a full scholarship to Ashworth University at nineteen. She completed both her bachelor's and master's degrees within five years. She was my junior at school but a senior to Zachary. Basically, we're all alumni but from different years.

Late last year, Rachel returned to the country and made a big show by refusing to use her father's connections at Harrison & Associates. Instead, she applied and got a job at my husband's company as an administrative director. In less than a year, she'd been promoted to Executive VP.

That earned her quite a reputation and people started calling her the "Powerhouse Princess," who was beautiful, talented, and capable.

Even Zachary couldn't hide the admiration he had for her. I could hear it in his voice and it irritated me. "Sounds like you're impressed by this 'Princess,' huh? Did you make up that nickname, or did someone else make it up?"

"Others gave her that one." Zachary chuckled. "Gracie, why do I hear jealousy in your voice? Do you have any beef with her? Why are you investigating her?"

"She's sleeping with my husband and she's ready to get into a fight with me, so I need to know who I'm up against," I replied calmly.

"Whoa, seriously?" Zachary seemed to think I was joking.

"Why not find out for yourself if you want to know?" I hung up.

Zachary was my junior colleague, he was a law school whiz kid a year before he got out of school. Four years ago, when Tyler's company went public overseas, I visited our alma mater and met him. So when he returned to the country, he kept in touch and we became friends. He was a perfect example of a "slash career" person. He was primarily a lawyer but he also worked as a headhunter to recruit top talent across industries.

Now I understood why Rachel was so bold at the coffee shop, she must have been relying on her record to back it up.

Tyler and I were high school classmates. We were nicknamed the "Power Couple", because the first and second positions in our class rankings were always between us.

Later, we both went to study in the Republic of Novaria. Our story was just a classic high-school-sweethearts-to-marriage path. We graduated, got married, got employed, quit our jobs and started a business. We knew each other like the backs of our hands. Now, suddenly, my well-known hand was telling me it wanted to be replaced.

This was so hard for me.

But regardless, I had to keep myself together. At this point, Tyler was so determined. Even if I didn't want a divorce, he would make his move.
