This was how men were. When they loved someone, they would sweet talk them, promising them the whole world and everything within.. Once they fell out of love, they wouldn't even have a civil conversation.
I fought to suppress the pain in my heart and continued with a forced composure, "You cheated on me, do you still expect me to be calm about it?" My eyes darted between him and Rachel. "When did this start between you two?"
After hesitating for a moment, he looked at me. "There's no point in discussing that now. You know the situation. I was struggling with how to tell you. Now that you know, I don't need to explain. Let's just get divorced. You get the kid and the money while I keep the company."
His words were like bullets and they ripped holes in my heart.
My chest started hurting again, and my vision blurred.
"A week ago, you said we'd split the company shares fifty-fifty. Right now, I have thirteen percent, you have thirty-one. To make it even, you'd need to give me another nine percent," I said sadly as I had started feeling the familiar sting in my eyes, the warning sign of tears. But I refused to cry, I shouldn't be crying in front of Rachel.
Tyler smacked the table hard. "No! After evaluating the company, I realized I can't do that anymore. During startup, I developed the core technology while you just handled management and venture capital. The evaluation shows that my contribution was worth far more than yours. Since we're talking divorce, I will buy back your shares and pay you the profits for all these years. That money would set you and our son up for life, you will be living like millionaires."
I was stunned.
I gave him time to think, hoping he'd come to his senses and apologize when he thought about our child. Instead, he was busy arranging property division and asset evaluation.
"Here's the divorce agreement. Look through it and sign if you're okay with it." He motioned for Rachel to pull out some papers from her bag which he later handed to me.
"Did she help you write this divorce agreement and arrange the evaluation?" I took the papers from him. Without looking at them, I slammed the papers against the table.
Tyler neither confirmed nor denied, he just tapped the table and gestured to me to read the agreement.
I wanted to be strong. I felt like tossing the agreement aside and walking out. But I needed to see how heartless he had become. I fought back tears and swallowed my pride, I nodded and picked up the agreement.
It was crystal clear, I would get the kid, the money and the house. Everything else would be off-limits to me. He gave me our child that he knew I could never abandon and some money that was meager compared to our family's real worth.
"I'm not divorcing you. Do whatever you want together," I stood up and tore the agreement to pieces in front of them. Then I turned to Rachel. "But remember this, Rachel, as long as I don't divorce him, you'll just remain a mistress. You'll never be able to show your face in public, and that baby in your belly will always be illegitimate, a bastard."
Rachel's face dropped. "How did you know I was pregnant?"
