Chapter 7 Grandfather's Return

Emma's POV:

Sure enough, Adrian jumped up to answer the phone.

I couldn't hear their conversation, but I watched as he quickly hung up, threw on his jacket, and rushed out without looking back.

As if I didn't even exist.

Once Adrian left, the silence returned.

To my surprise, I wasn't as upset as I thought I'd be, maybe I was finally ready to let go of him.

The storm outside had stopped. I lay in bed, closed my eyes, and eventually drifted off to sleep.

I woke up early to prepare for work.

Just as I was about to leave, Eleanor called.

"Hi, Emma. How are you?"

"Hey, Mom. I'm good. Just heading to work."

"Can you and Adrian come over tonight? Your grandfather's back, and he wants a family dinner."

"Grandfather's back?"

"Yes. Can you both make it?"

"Of course."

I was thrilled to hear that Grandfather was back.

With him here, we could finally move forward with the divorce.

The thought of getting Adrian to sign the divorce papers put me in such a good mood that work flew by.

Jonathan even praised my professionalism.

He said I was this TV station's most promising host.

When we ran into each other after work, he joked, "Emma, you're so capable, I'm worried about keeping my job!"

"Oh, please. I'm the last person who'd threaten your position."

I was walking out of the office, laughing and chatting with Jonathan when I suddenly heard a cold voice call my name.

"Emma!"

I turned to see Adrian standing at the entrance, his expression grim.

I quickly scanned the area for Aria, but she wasn't with him.

It was clear he was here for me.

Adrian picking me up - this had to be Eleanor and Victoria's doing.

He was probably upset because his family was forcing him to act like my husband again, making him leave Aria.

I could understand why Adrian was in a bad mood.

"Well, I'll leave you with your friend. See you tomorrow." Jonathan quickly said goodbye as soon as he saw Adrian.

"Okay, see you tomorrow!" I smiled and waved.

Before I could lower my hand, Adrian grabbed my arm and pulled me toward his car.

"What are you doing? Adrian!"

Just like that, my easy, happy day was ruined.

What's wrong with him? We're not even really married - he has no right to treat me like this!

"Get in the car!" Adrian snapped, yanking the car door open.

I turned to roll my eyes at him. He shoved me into the car and slammed the door.

Then he walked around the hood and got into the driver's seat. I chose to stay quiet.

Whatever he's upset about, it's not my problem. Besides, arguing with him is pointless. I'm just glad I won't have to deal with him much longer.

Grandfather's back. Once I get the marriage certificate and finish the divorce paperwork, I'll finally be free.

The atmosphere in the car was tense, and Adrian's expression was cold enough to freeze you.

I tried to avoid his gaze, staring out the window.

Blurry streetlights and buildings passed by us - I could tell how fast he was driving.

I instinctively gripped the handle on the car door.

Suddenly, the car screeched to a halt at the curb.

The force of the stop almost threw me forward, the seatbelt digging into my shoulder.

I whirled around with a yelp, glaring at Adrian. "What's your problem? I didn't ask you to pick me up - go find your Aria and leave me out of this!" I snapped.

"We're not divorced yet, Emma. How are you already flirting with other men?" Adrian said coldly.
