When I couldn't get through, Grandma took her phone and tried calling Emma herself.

Emma picked up immediately, which made my anger and hurt flare up. Clearly, she just didn't want to talk to me.

Grandma gave me a disapproving glance, then switched the phone on speaker and spoke softly.

"Emma, sweetheart, where are you? Are you okay? I'm worried."

"I'm fine, Grandma. I'm home. I just wanted to clean up this mess ...
