“No, she’s very stubborn. She won’t admit that she seduced Reed.”
Felix was encountering someone this stubborn for the first time, and he didn’t quite know how to handle it.
“Maybe she’s really being wronged.”
The colleague, a woman, trusted her intuition and didn’t think Evelyn was that type of person.
Felix didn’t reply. He was in a bad mood from the overtime, so after quenching his thirst, he wanted to step outside for a cigarette to relieve his work stress.
Just as he exited the department office, he ran into a familiar face.
“Vic, what wind blew you here?” Felix exclaimed in surprise.
The person was none other than Victor from Cardiac Surgery.
He seemed to be off work, not in his usual scrubs, dressed in all black, which made his tall figure stand out even more.
The two had been classmates, though with an age gap, but Victor had been a genius.
At 15, he was specially recruited by the medical university, and they had been in the same class.
But they only shared a year and a half together before this genius received an offer from a top medical school overseas.
He left for abroad, and for the first two years, Felix occasionally heard about him, but after that, he completely disappeared.
Until last month, the hospital’s top brass announced that they had hired a cardiac surgery expert with a high salary from overseas.
When Felix saw the resume, he instantly recognized the identity of the person: his genius former classmate.
When Victor came to report to the hospital, Felix had specifically gone to meet him, which was why Victor found his way here.
“Having a smoke?” Victor asked, noticing the cigarette in his hand.
“Sure, want one?” Felix offered.
Victor didn’t decline and followed Felix to the smoking room.
Felix was genuinely curious about what Victor had been up to in those years abroad, but since he wasn’t the type to share, Felix didn’t ask.
Halfway through the cigarette, Victor casually brought it up, “I heard there’s some gossip happening at the hospital today. Were you in the interrogation?”
“Yeah.” Felix furrowed his brow tightly as soon as he mentioned it. “That girl’s really stubborn. We’ve been questioning her all day, and she won’t admit anything. She’s a tough nut to crack.”
Tough?
Victor didn’t think so.
He thought she was quite soft.
“Want to see for yourself?”
Felix was taken aback. In his impression, Victor was a naturally aloof person who didn’t care about gossip like this. He didn’t seem like someone who’d be interested in trivial matters.
So, it surprised him.
Victor crushed out his cigarette, his expression still cold.
Felix led him to the interrogation room.
When they entered, Evelyn was slumped over the table.
She must have been exhausted and was trying to rest for a bit.
He walked over and knocked sharply on the table. “Evelyn, stop sleeping. Sit up. We’re continuing the interrogation.”
Evelyn straightened up with an effort, ready for the next round of questioning.
But when she saw the person following Felix, her face changed in a flash.
Why is he here?
She had kept calm all day, facing numerous rounds of interrogation without losing her composure.
But the moment she saw Victor, she showed panic.
Unlike her flustered reaction, Victor remained calm, his dark eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses deep as the sea.
“Evelyn, did you seduce Reed?” Felix asked the same question he had asked a hundred times today.
“No.” Evelyn lowered her gaze, denying it. Her hands, resting on her lap, nervously twisted her pants.
She had faced all the previous interrogations head-on, but this time, she lowered her head.
Felix felt something was off and pressed further, “Then why did Reed say you seduced him?”
“He’s framing me! He’s the one who’s been sexually harassing me!”
Maybe it was because Victor was there, but answering this question made Evelyn feel humiliated, and her tone became more intense.
Felix asked, “Do you have any evidence?”
Evelyn bit her lip, not replying.
She naturally didn’t have any evidence, or she wouldn’t be under investigation.
“From a motive standpoint, you seem more suspicious. I suggest you confess now to save everyone’s time.” Felix slammed the interrogation file shut and sternly warned Evelyn.
“I didn’t.” Evelyn’s denial wasn’t as firm as before. She muttered again, “I really didn’t seduce him.”
Felix’s temper flared, and he was about to snap.
But Victor, who had remained silent until now, suddenly spoke up. “Did you not hear? She said no.”
Felix’s words were cut off, and he looked at Evelyn, then at Victor.
Evelyn’s eyes were red-rimmed, as if she had been deeply wronged.
Victor’s gaze was cold, as if warning him.
Felix’s momentum immediately weakened, as if something invisible had squeezed his throat. “Let’s end it here for now. I’ll check the interrogation record from Dr. Joyce’s side.”
Evelyn kept her eyes on Victor, surprised that he would believe her.
When no one else trusted her, he chose to believe her.
Her throat tightened, and her eyes were filled with tears as she looked at Victor.
Before he left, she finally spoke, her voice choked with emotion, “Thank you, Dr. Kingsley.”
The man only left her with his retreating back.
Cold and indifferent, as if nothing in the world could capture his attention.
Reed’s interrogation was handled completely differently from Evelyn’s.
He almost seemed like he was on vacation.
Not only was there a lavish meal, but fine wine and cigarettes were also provided.
Meanwhile, Evelyn hadn’t even been given a glass of hot water.
“Dr. Joyce, just treat this as a vacation. If you need anything, feel free to ask.” The administrative supervisor was flattering Reed.
After all, his father was a board member at Serenity Hospital, and if he wanted to promote someone, it was just a matter of speaking a word.
If Reed had more ability, he wouldn’t still be a department head at his age.
“Chase, you have a bright future ahead of you,” Reed joked.
Chase was more than eager to please, even personally pouring Reed some wine. “We didn’t prepare well enough. We only have this not-so-great vintage of Lafite, but thankfully Dr. Joyce isn’t picky.”
“It’s fine,” Reed said after drinking two glasses of wine, starting to feel a little lightheaded. “Has she confessed yet?”
“Not yet. She’s stubborn. She’s young and hasn’t fallen yet, so she doesn’t understand how ruthless the world is.”
Reed mocked, “Unappreciative little thing. It’s an honor for her that I’m interested in her. Trying to play games with me? She’s overestimating herself!”
“That’s right. Don’t worry, Dr. Joyce, I’ll handle it. She’ll confess, one way or another. She’s just waiting to be fired.”
“You handle it, I trust you. It’s a shame though, she’s not a virgin anymore. You don’t know how disgusting it was when I saw those dirty marks on her. A woman with no self-respect— I’m not even interested in playing with her!” Reed spat a few more insults.
Chase eagerly went along with it.
“By the way, that new girl in your department, she’s pretty. Is she a virgin?”
The alcohol was getting to Reed’s head, and his true nature started to show.
“I don’t know about that.” Chase had no experience in this area.
Reed boasted proudly, “I have experience with that. Have you ever heard of the unbroken eyebrow? A virgin’s eyebrows lie gently close to the skin near the brow bone, not messy and not standing up. A woman who’s not a virgin, though? Her eyebrows are lifted away from the skin and spread out like flowers after the rain, soft and charming.”
Chase was in awe. “Dr. Joyce, you really have the experience.”
Reed, far from being ashamed, was pleased with himself. “When you’ve done it enough, you can tell.”
Meanwhile, in the shadowed corner outside Interrogation Room 2, a tall figure leaned slightly against the wall.
The darkness concealed his face, making it impossible to discern his expression.
After a while, the tall figure disappeared into the shadows.
