"Aiya, no, Grandpa, have you never considered that she might be a lost member of our family? Maybe someone's illegitimate daughter? Isn't that possible?"
At the mention of "illegitimate daughter," the elder's half-closed eyes suddenly snapped open, as if he had heard something unbelievable, looking at Young Master Micheal in astonishment.
Young Master Micheal touched his nose, although he also thought this possibility was unlikely. But he disagreed with the elders in his family who were quick to resort to violence.
He began to fabricate a story, "Grandpa, think about it. Our family's legacy has never been taught to outsiders, yet Nancy knows it. She couldn't have guessed it, right? Someone must have taught her. But who? It must be someone from our family. Why would our family member teach her? There must be some relation, right?"
His convoluted explanation, like a tongue twister, left the elder with cloudy eyes, growing increasingly bewildered.
"Our people? Our family has always been in Europe and America, never in Henriana. And only the direct descendants know..."
The elder's heart skipped a beat at this thought, but then he felt it was impossible.
He shook his head, smacked his lips, leaving Young Master Micheal and Tina looking at him in confusion.
"Grandpa..."
Young Master Micheal tentatively interrupted his deep thought, "How about we don't go to Liverton to kill her? We could send someone to Liverton to befriend her and then find out how she learned to tie the lover's knot?"
The elder pondered deeply and nodded. Young Master Micheal pressed on.
"Look, Grandpa, our family is all male, but our custom is that women lead the family. That's why, even at your age, you're still the family head, unable to pass it on. What I mean is, if Nancy really is someone's illegitimate daughter, it would be great for our family. We could deceive her into coming back and make her the family head!"
Their family had a peculiar tradition; only women could lead. Each generation was headed by a woman, but in the elder's generation, no girls were born, forcing him to take over, hoping his offspring would produce a girl. Yet, all were boys.
He pinned his hopes on the third generation, but they were also all boys.
It was as if they were cursed, unable to have a single girl.
So now, the elder lit up at the possibility, almost wishing he could run to Liverton himself.
After hesitating, he suddenly looked at Young Master Micheal, "Since it's your idea, Micheal, you go to Liverton. Remember, find out the exact situation. If Nancy really is a lost gem of our family, you must bring her back!"
Young Master Micheal had been eager to escape the endless matchmaking arranged by his family.
Hearing this, he immediately nodded vigorously, his face flushing with excitement, "Don't worry, Grandpa, I won't let you down!"
The elder nodded and handed a jade piece to Young Master Micheal.
Seeing the jade, Young Master Micheal's eyes widened in surprise, "Grandpa, this is..."
"Yes."
The elder nodded, "If you think it's appropriate, give this jade to Nancy as The Thompson family's welcome gift."
At this, Micheal Thompson's jaw nearly dropped...
