Following James's pointing finger, they saw a man holding a tool, appearing to dig up a grave!
"Mom!"
Nancy's heart raced as she sprinted up the hill.
Charlie and the others didn't hesitate and ran after her.
Henry and Charlie were the fastest, bypassing Nancy like the wind.
The man, holding a shovel and struggling to pry open the grave cover, turned to see them running towards him. Panicking, he dropped the shovel and fled!
"Don't run!"
Henry shouted, putting all his strength into his legs, and chased after the man.
Charlie, even faster, darted past Nancy's mother's grave in pursuit.
Henry ignored the grave, seeing Charlie ahead, and jumped down the steps to catch up.
Together, they finally cornered the man on the stairs.
Charlie reached out, grabbed the man's arm, and kicked his knee.
With a thud, the man fell to the ground, his knee throbbing in pain, temporarily immobilized.
Henry, panting, approached and slapped the man's face.
"Don't you know that digging up someone's grave is a despicable act?"
With a sharp slap, the man's face turned to the side, blood trickling from his mouth. He looked at Henry in terror and burst into tears, "I was just doing a job for someone! Please don't hit me… don't hit me…"
Charlie and Henry exchanged a glance, refraining from further violence. Charlie pulled the man up forcefully.
They marched the man back towards the grave, where Nancy, Linda, and James Firth were waiting.
Tom had put down the items he was carrying and knelt to inspect the grave.
"Ma'am, your mother's grave has been partially pried open. With a bit more force, the lid would have come off."
It was clear that the grave needed either to be opened or resealed; it couldn't be left as it was.
Nancy exhaled sharply, turning to the man Charlie and Henry had caught, her eyes reddening, "Who are you? Why are you digging up my mother's grave!?"
Linda was equally furious, "Yeah, don't you have any decency? Don't you know that doing such things will curse you?"
The man's face still stung, and seeing so many people, he was terrified, tears streaming down as he cried, "It wasn't my idea! I was just hired to do it!"
Nancy clenched her fists, her hands trembling. She gritted her teeth and asked, "Tell me, who hired you to dig up my mother's grave!?"
