The man looked aggrieved, “Am I the type to slack off and shirk responsibilities?”
Seeing Charlie’s lips tighten suddenly, the man shrank back in fear and quickly changed his tune, “I take photos every time I clean the grave. The photos have the date on them, and I send them to my brother.”
“Heh…”
Linda rolled her eyes, “Those can be faked, you know!”
“Huh?”
The man was stunned for a moment and anxiously asked, “How can they be faked?”
Linda, “…”
She was too lazy to deal with him!
It seemed that if he wasn't being watched, he really would slack off and shirk responsibilities!
Nancy also looked at him with disdain, “So, the person who asked you to dig up the grave is also your brother?”
“Yes, that’s right!”
The man nodded vigorously, as if afraid Nancy and the others wouldn’t believe him. He even offered, “I can take you to find him, really. Once you meet him, you’ll know I’m telling the truth.”
Nancy and Charlie definitely intended to meet his brother, but Charlie looked at the half-opened grave cover and pressed his lips together, worriedly glancing at Nancy, “Nan, what about your mother’s grave…”
Nancy’s eyes flashed with determination as she looked at her mother’s grave and firmly said, “Since it’s already half-opened, let’s open it completely! I want to see what’s inside!”
Nancy had a gut feeling that there was more in the grave than just her mother’s ashes, considering the person who had been guarding it for five years decided to open it today.
Feeling a bit worried, she explained to the Firth Family, “Since we’re settling in Liverton, we won’t have much time to return to City Nustin. I want to take my mother’s ashes to Liverton and find a new grave for her, so I can visit her every year.”
James, being astute, immediately understood that Nancy feared the Firth Family might think she was being heartless or unfilial.
He laughed brightly, “Yes, Nan, since we’re all settling in Liverton, it’s not suitable to leave your mother’s ashes here. Let’s get to it!”
Henry handed the man over to Charlie, and he, James, and Tom worked together to open the grave cover.
Mark helped Old Master Firth walk up the hill, followed by aunts and uncles. Old Master Firth, seeing James digging up Nancy Swinton’s mother’s grave, immediately flew into a rage, his legs no longer aching or weak. He pushed Mark aside and ran over with surprising agility.
“James! What are you doing? How can you touch Nan’s mother’s grave!”
Did he want to ruin Nan and Charlie’s future together?
He was furious, raising his cane to hit James on the back. Nancy quickly intervened.
“Grandpa, it’s not like that. I asked Second Uncle to help open the grave.”
Old Master Firth was taken aback, “You!? Why?”
Nancy pointed to the man restrained by Charlie and explained what had happened.
Only then did Old Master Firth notice the man. After hearing the explanation, he finally understood.
“Right, since it’s already half-opened, let’s open it completely. Nan, when we return, let Charlie find a good burial place for your mother.”
Nancy wasn’t very superstitious, and since the state had regulations for cemeteries, it wasn’t as easy as burying someone wherever you wanted. She was about to explain when James suddenly shouted, “Nan, it’s open!”
