He was still feeling smug when Charlie spoke again.
“Second, although Nan’s mother has passed away, she left behind a diary. In it, she clearly and plainly wrote how your Thompson family abandoned her and her son, betraying them completely!”
Arthur opened his mouth to explain, but Charlie didn’t give him the chance.
“Since you were heartless enough to abandon them back then, don’t shamelessly come to claim kinship now. Even though the Thompson family is powerful overseas, with enough money to bury an entire city, sorry, Nan doesn’t need your money!”
The implication was clear—no matter how many extravagant gifts you’ve brought, no matter how valuable they are as a so-called dowry, Nancy couldn’t care less and won’t be moved.
Arthur had expected some resistance during this visit, so to show his sincerity, he personally brought the Thompson family’s core members. But he didn’t expect the resistance to be as tall as the Himalayas, leaving him seeing stars and feeling dizzy.
Micheal didn’t expect it either. Even with his grandfather personally attending, they were still treated this way. He quickly stepped forward, putting on his usual playful grin as he addressed Charlie with a smirk.
“Mr. Firth, don’t be like this! My grandfather came in person today because he heard that you and Nancy are holding a wedding. He was worried people might criticize or slander Nancy, so he brought my uncles along to show support. We’re not here to ask for anything, just to make sure Nancy doesn’t suffer.”
“Yes, exactly!”
Arthur quickly seized the opportunity, “I just feel bad for Nan. She’s beautiful and talented, but her background is unclear. Son-in-law, you know how ruthless high society can be, lifting the high and stepping on the low. I just don’t want Nan to be wronged…”
Charlie’s deep eyes glinted with cold sarcasm as he looked at them. “And who’s responsible for Nan’s unclear background? Was it my doing?”
“No, no, it wasn’t.”
Arthur quickly waved his hands. “I don’t even know which scoundrel in the Thompson family did such a disgraceful thing! Charlie, don’t worry, I’ll definitely find out who did it and punish them according to the family rules, standing up for Nan!”
“You’d better stop calling her Nan…”
Charlie raised an eyebrow in mocking amusement. “You haven’t even been recognized as family, yet you’re calling her so affectionately. Are you trying to force Nan into acknowledging your kinship?”
“I… no, that’s not what I meant…”
Arthur was baffled. Was Charlie born with a sharp tongue or what? How could he be so relentless when he had the upper hand?
He was utterly frustrated. “We truly came with the utmost sincerity this time. We’re not asking Nan to acknowledge us. We’re just here to attend her wedding, that’s all.”
Charlie let out a sarcastic chuckle. “Your ‘pure intentions’ sure are something!”
Arthur: “...”
He really wanted to punch Charlie. What should he do?
His fingers tightened and loosened around his cane, over and over again. He was struggling to hold himself back...
“Grandfather.”
Micheal noticed his grandfather’s patience was nearing its limit and quickly pulled Arthur aside.
Are you kidding? If they got into a fight with Charlie now, it would definitely ruin any chance of Nancy acknowledging them!
“Mr. Firth, no more jokes. We’re really just here to attend the wedding today. As the saying goes, one doesn’t hit a smiling face. We sincerely congratulate you and know you’re busy. Please go ahead and take care of what you need to; we can take care of ourselves.”
Old Master Firth gave them a disdainful glance. “If you’re really just here to congratulate, then drop all this ‘in-laws’ and ‘son-in-law’ nonsense! Otherwise, anyone who doesn’t know the situation might really think my Nan is trying to climb the social ladder, happily recognizing the Thompson family just because they’re rich and powerful!”
