"Isn't that right? This whole thing is so strange."
"Hey, I heard that Lily and her sister Rose look exactly alike—they’re twins! Could it be that... Andrew originally loved Lily's sister, but because she ended up with another man, he settled for marrying Lily? Then, when Rose died in childbirth, he adopted her daughter?"
“Tsk... The way you put it, it sounds a bit... off, don’t you think?”
If Andrew had simply liked Rose Dench and adopted Nancy out of love for her, it wouldn’t have seemed so bad. But the idea that he was in love with Rose while marrying her lookalike sister Lily made Andrew seem... rather scummy.
As Andrew overheard the gossip around him, his eyes gradually turned bloodshot. He felt like the Thompson family wasn’t here just to deliver Nancy's dowry—they were here to make things difficult for him!
“Mr. Thompson! Everyone knows I had a car accident before and was in a coma for three full years! When I woke up, I had no memory of the past two decades. What’s the meaning of you coming here to interrogate me now? Are you here to cause trouble and ruin Nan’s wedding?”
"Oh, my, my, what a heavy accusation you've placed on me…”
Arthur raised a hand and patted his chest in mock fear. Just as he was about to speak again, Nancy, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke up.
“Mr. Thompson, the Thompson family has yet to find out who my biological father is. People say that the debt of birth pales in comparison to the debt of raising. Andrew raised me for over twenty years; he is my father. So please, step down and stop disrupting my wedding!”
“Oh, Nancy...”
Arthur became flustered. “We still don’t know the full truth of what happened all those years ago, but there’s clearly something suspicious about Andrew adopting you—”
“Since no one knows what happened back then, and Andrew raised me, he is my father. As for you, the Thompson family…”
Underneath her red veil, Nancy let out a mocking laugh. “Heh... I haven’t eaten even a grain of rice from you, nor have I received any favors from your family. I don’t even know who my biological father is. Tell me, what connection do I have to you?”
This was Nancy publicly cutting ties with the Thompson family.
While many were envious, others secretly rejoiced, thinking Nancy was a fool for rejecting such a powerful backing. It was laughable to them!
Suddenly, Nancy's arm was forcefully grabbed. Before either Arthur or Andrew could react, she was yanked away by someone.
The person dragged Nancy quite a distance before finally stopping.
“Nancy, are you stupid?!”
As soon as the voice rang out, Nancy immediately recognized it—it was Eva Luther.
Nancy didn’t say anything, merely standing there quietly.
“Do you have any idea what the Thompson family is? They’re a wealthy and powerful family, with riches that rival nations! Even though their assets are mostly abroad now, I can tell you with absolute certainty that not even the Firth family, or our Lesser family, can compare to them!”
Eva glared at Nancy, frustrated beyond words. “Since you’re determined to marry Charlie, and since Charlie insists on marrying you, you have to accept the Thompson family today. Otherwise, as your mother, I’ll be the first to oppose this marriage!”
Her words were filled with urgency and conviction, yet Nancy remained calm in stark contrast.
“Mrs. Lesser, I wonder in what capacity you’re speaking to me right now.”
