Sophie and Lola had proud smiles on their faces as they stood on the stage, As soon as Ethan appeared, they could confront him. Once there was proof that Lola's child was Ethan's, all their dreams would come true.
Owen walked over to Ethan while surrounded by his bodyguards. His gaze was stern and sharp as he looked at Ethan while speaking in a solemn voice.
"Ethan, is Miss Lawson's baby yours?"
Ethan had been having fun with the sensual lady he was flirting with when Arthur suddenly appeared and slapped him across the face. Hence, he was seething in anger and annoyance.
"Grandpa, are you going senile? How can you believe what Lola says? Besides, in the two times we did it, we have always…"
Before he could finish shouting, there was a loud slap echoing through the hall as Arthur was slapped across the face.
Arthur was trembling in anger as he furiously glared at Ethan while shouting, "Brat, who gave you the right to speak to your grandfather in that tone? Apologize to him now."
Ethan's head was spinning from the two slaps. In a trembling voice, he said, "Grandpa, the child is not mine."
"How can you say that, Ethan? I'm clearly pregnant with your baby," Lola sobbed like that was the greatest injustice she had ever heard.
"Lola, the baby cannot be mine. We use protection both times. We were also only together for a few days. How can you be pregnant?"
Ethan was annoyed. He had only been playing around with Lola. He had not expected her to be so difficult.
He turned around to head back to the beautiful lady she left behind as he was not in the mood to argue with these people.
Just as he did so, Lola let out a cry.
"Ethan, have you forgotten that night two weeks ago when you got drunk at Shangri-La Bar? I was the one to bring you home. We did it back then. That's when the baby was conceived."
Ethan froze.
He remembered that night. He had gotten heavily drunk at Shangri-La Bar as he was upset over losing a boxing match. He did recall a woman approaching him, and he immediately did it with her.
Could Lola be that woman?
Ethan did not feel good. If that was true, then he could never be rid of Lola.
Arthur coldly exclaimed, "You have no proof. If we assume the baby is Ethan's just because you said so, then every pregnant woman in the city could blame Ethan for their pregnancy as well!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the hall was filled with a chorus of cries from the crowd.
"Yes! Show us the evidence!"
"Lola, don't you need to get a checkup done if you're pregnant? Show us the medical report!"
"What's the use of a medical report? If Lola is determined to make Ethan take the blame, then she could have easily faked it."
The group of socialites led by Diana were the most enthusiastic in their cries. They had stayed behind because they wanted to laugh at Lola.
The calls and jeers made Sophie's smile grow wider. The more people talked, the more beneficial it was for her.
Diana had no fear of blowing up the entire drama, so she sneered and said, "If you want us all to believe you, then you should undergo a check-up for her pregnancy in front of everyone."
"I…" Lola pretended to be reluctant.
The shady look in her eyes made Diana smirk and mockingly asked, "What's the matter? Scared? You must be scared that everyone will find out the baby isn't Ethan's!"
"Fine. Let's do it. The child is Ethan's. I have nothing to fear." Lola acted like she gave in as she clenched her fists.
While Sophie had said that everyone was foolproof, Lola was still anxious. If anything went wrong, she would be the laughingstock of the city. No man would ever dare to marry her.
Sophie noticed her nervousness and whispered in her ear, "Don't worry. I've prepared everything. Just wait. You'll be Mrs. Austin!"
Lola's nerves were immediately pacified by those words.
Freya silently watched. Everything was developing as expected. Sophie was pulling this trick likely because she had already bribed the doctor that would be checking on Lola.
Even if the baby was not Ethan's, the facts would be twisted.
As she watched Lola walk off the stage, Freya's smile twisted into a cold smirk.
Sophie's detailed scheme would lead the Lawson family to glory if she succeeded, but forever doom the family if she failed. They would be the subject of ridicule in the event of failure.
Bradley observed every expression that crossed Freya's face. While he did not know what she was planning, he could vaguely guess that it was, to some extent, tied to how the Lawson family would be crying in agony later on.
As everyone waited for the results, Freya leaned against Bradley while playing with her phone.
Ella had messaged her just now to say that everything was ready. She did not need to do anything except wait now.
She had not planned on ruining the Lawson family yet. She only wanted to give them a taste of the agony that awaited them. On the day of her mother's death anniversary, she would settle all past and present grievances.
Seconds ticked by, and everyone started whispering and discussing about the issue.
No one expected a mere birthday banquet would lead to several huge scandals happening.
First, it was the Lawson family's second daughter's affair. Then, it was their third daughter and the baby she had with Ethan. If news of either of those were leaked, it would be a sensational headline.
The entire hall was in chaos like they were in a market of arguing and bargaining individuals.
Just then, someone shouted, "Look! She's coming out!"
Everyone instantly turned to look at Lola.
Lola had walked out of the room with a confident look on her face as though the outcome had already been decided.
Sophie approached her with a smile. "Lola, you look tired. Go rest by the side."
"Okay, Mom."
Lola put on a weak look as she occasionally rubbed her stomach.
Meanwhile, Ethan was beside himself with nerves. If that really was his baby, his grandfather would force him to marry Lola.
No. He could not marry her.
His life had just started. There were so many beautiful women he had yet to experience. He did not want to get married.
Of the two families, one waited in eager anticipation while the other waited in worry. Freya's smile grew as she watched them, and she reached out to nudge Bradley.
"What do you think the outcome will be?"
He raised his eyebrows and smiled. "Did you have someone meddle in it?"
Freya shushed him. "I was standing next to you the whole time. How could I have done anything?"
She would never admit it. Even if Lola fell from grace today, it was merely a case of reaping what she sowed.
"Oh, right. I recall seeing you going after Ethan before. Do you have something against him?"
Ethan had been beaten half to death and was rumored to have suffered several broken ribs. As he had to be hospitalized for a few days, Freya believed that he held a grudge against Ethan, perhaps even the Austins.
