Ah, this is the woman my client hired me to get rid of. Cain's client had paid him 10,000 as a deposit for the task of getting rid of Freya. If he succeeded, Cain would be paid 50,000.
It was a great deal, and he would be a fool to not take it.
Cain looked away and stroked his beard before pulling out a disc of some sort from his pocket. Then, he began mumbling random words.
The disc, which resembled a compass, had a pointer that began to spin. Cain closed his eyes and chanted something that, when it ended, made the pointer stop.
Everyone stared at the compass. Suddenly, Cain opened his eyes and stared at Freya.
"Father, did you find the thing?" Lydia swiftly asked.
"Yes, I have."
Cain narrowed his eyes and solemnly declared, "It was not a thing that cursed your daughter, but a person."
"Who is it?" Arthur asked.
Cain held the compass and walked around the group before finally stopping before Freya. The compass was spinning so fast that it seemed like it would fall apart at any second.
"It's this woman. Her presence clashes with your daughter's destiny. Her existence led to her illness and will bring bad luck to all of you," Cain declared.
Upon hearing that, Lydia exclaimed, "Are you sure, Father? Freya is the family's new bride. How can her fate clash with Jinny's?"
"If I'm not mistaken, this woman is born on the 7th of October. That date's luck with your daughter's luck. This person is cursed," Cain said, deliberately putting the compass before Freya as it kept spinning.
Upon hearing that, Freya internally scoffed.
She had not expected Lydia to resort to such tricks just to get rid of her.
Cursed? Ha!
She wanted to see if Lydia would end up embarrassing himself when things escalated.
She looked up to the second floor, and her eyes met with Bradley's over the wooden railing. The man's eyes assured her that he would protect her.
Just one look made her feel very secure.
Bradley had always been backing her up, silently protecting her in his own way.
Lydia pretended to be afraid as she turned to look at Owen and said, "Dad, if Father Cain is right, will our family be cursed with a series of bad luck?"
Arthur quickly interjected, saying, "Yes, Dad. Jinny is first, but who will be next?"
Arthur and Lydia were very nervous, while Brian's side of the family remained exceedingly calm.
They simply did not believe in fortune telling of any kind.
Lydia was always up to something, plus Freya had just angered her and Arthur. Who knows if this is a new trick?
"Father Cain, what should we do now?" Lydia looked distressed and troubled.
"It's simple. Don't let this woman enter the house, and your daughter will soon recover. Everyone will be safe and sound," Cain replied in a mysterious voice.
"Dad, what should we do about..."Lydia looked very nervous as she turned to ask Owen for his opinion.
Owen furiously slammed a hand on the table and sternly shouted, "Nonsense! You were the ones who said that Freya and Bradley were a match made in heaven, and now you're saying that Freya's and Jinny's fates clash. I don't care about all these things. Freya is my daughter-in-law now, and nobody will be able to chase her out."
"Dad, if we don't make Freya leave, Jinny will never get better." Lydia began to cry again. "Freya may be your daughter-in-law, but Jinny is your granddaughter. Are you going to watch Jinny die while you do nothing?"
"Yeah, Dad. You can't let Jinny die!" Arthur chimed in.
Freya innocently listened to the three of them argue before turning to Cain.
"Father, you said I was born on the 7th of October? I was born in July, though. I was a premature baby, and I was born three months before I was due. Mom didn't want anyone to know, so she had someone change my birth date. All of my documents have the fake birthday."
Cain was dumbfounded to hear that.
A fake birth date?
Would that not make all the things he just said invalid?
He looked at Lydia, not knowing how to continue the act.
Freya took advantage of Cain's moment of distraction and snatched the compass from him. She held it up and examined it for a few long moments before letting out a mischievous laugh.
Then, everyone watched as she took a magnet out of the compass.
The compass that was originally spinning randomly in front of her stopped.
Then, Freya handed the compass back to Cain and said, "Father, do you want to give it a try?"
Cain wiped a bead of cold sweat from his face as he realized that his little trick had been exposed.
His silence prompted Freya to say with a smile while playing with the magnet in her hand, "The reason the compass was spinning randomly around me was because you have used a magnet to disrupt the compass."
After saying that, she winked at Cain. "You say I'm cursed, but I think you are in for some bad luck, given how dark your forehead looks."
Cain's eyes went wide as he guiltily stammered, "You're talking nonsense. How can I be unlucky?"
He had been using this little trick to earn a living for years without ever being exposed. However, she saw through him at a glance and was now saying he was going to have bad luck, which made him feel a bit uneasy.
As the saying went, a guilty conscience made a person liable to panic.
"Believe it or not, that's up to you. However, if you don't solve it quickly, I'm afraid you'll have bad luck soon. That's because your face is already dark."
Cain was filled with fear as he asked in a trembling voice, "How should I resolve this?"
"It's simple. If you've taken advantage of someone, quickly return the money and get out of here. This disaster will naturally vanish on its own."
Freya was so solemn that what she said sounded like the facts.
However, she was not pretending to be mysterious. Over the years, she had indeed learned a bit about physiognomy. Everything she said to Cain was just a lie.
Unexpectedly, Cain was really feeling guilty. He quickly returned the deposit he had received from Lydia and said, "Madam, I won't do this anymore. Please find someone else to do it."
After saying that, he turned around to leave.
Freya was too uncanny. She actually saw through his tricks and even predict his misfortune, which made him uneasy.
It was more important to save his life than to earn more money.
"Wait, don't go..."
Lydia wanted to stop him, but Cain turned around and lashed out at her. "Don't come to me in the future. I won't take any jobs from the Austins."
When Bradley saw that Cain was about to leave, he signaled to Frederick. "Freya said his forehead is dark, indicating bad luck. Have some of the men escort him."
"Yes, Mr. Bradley."
Frederick headed downstairs and went off to intercept Cain with two bodyguards following behind him.
