'Mom!" What are you doing here this early?" I say as I open the door for my mom to come in, slightly irritated that she just showed up at my door step at 8:00am without a call or notification.
'I think I reserve the right to visit my only child who seems to have forgotten me despite all I've done for her and all the sacrifices I've made, anytime that I deem fit". She says holding her chest like she was stabbed in the heart.
Classic drama queen. 'I'm sorry mom I didn't mean it that way, of course you can visit me whenever you want. It's just, what if I wasn't home, what would you have done?"
'Where else would you be by 8:00am on a Saturday? I know how much you love to sleep in on the weekends and I know I'm not interrupting anything, it's not like you have a man who you'd bring over to spend the night. I don't understand how you can live in this big and beautiful house all alone Mel." She goes on with that look of wonder which I've gotten used to.
Here we go again. I just got out of bed, this is definitely not how I plan on starting out my day, I haven't even had coffee yet.
'Mom, don't you think it's a little too early for this?" I begin to say as I notice someone unloading her trunk through my kitchen window.
'Who is that?" I ask pointing towards her car.
'Oh, that's Matt, the man I told you about". She says smiling like a child.
'What is he doing here? I ask angrily? Why on earth would you bring your boyfriend to my house for Christ sake? A man I haven't even met!". What on earth was she thinking? She probably wasn't thinking at all because she seemed to lose all sense of proper reasoning whenever she was with a man.
'I'm sorry Mel, but you never come home anymore and you've turned down every opportunity to meet him. I knew if I told you he was coming you'd have had a fit, that's why I didn't inform you of our coming at all."
'Of course I would have had a fit. What's the point of meeting him? What about all the other ones I met? Where are they now? Didn't they all end the same way?
This one is different, I can feel it". She says a sounding a little bit hurt.
Speaking of different, there's something different about her. She looks really good. She has always been a really beautiful woman, but sometimess she just lets herself go. It's like she completely forgets to take care of herself or even brush her hair. But today she's glowing. She looks like someone who has no worries in the world, more beautiful than usual and her long black hair even looks shiny with their curls
At 46 years she still looks really young with her beautiful baby face and body that is shaped like a coke bottle. Everyday, I thank God for making me her exact replica because this woman looks like a goddess, no wonder she had no problem getting a boyfriend whenever she wanted one.
I just let out a sigh and shake my head 'Well, if you're happy, then I guess I'm happy for you. At least this one isn't covered in tattoos, he actually looks decent, handsome even".
'I know right, she says giggling excitedly like a teenage girl. He's so hot and romantic, last night he…"
'God, no Mom!" I shout covering my ears very quickly, knowing she has no filter. I do not want to hear what happened last night. That's a violation to my ears".
She laughs as Matt opens the door and walks in.
'Hi there Mel". He says with a very wide smile
'Hi, call me Melanie". I say reaching to take the grocery bags from him.
'Oh, I'm sorry. It's really great to finally meet you Melanie. Your mom has told me so much about you.
'Really? I'm sorry, I can't say the same about you". I say as I walk over to my fridge to load the food items they brought. At least he had enough sense to buy groceries.
'Be nice" my mom hiss.
'The man showed up on my doorstep uninvited by 8:00am, trust me, this is nice". I hiss back through clenched teeth.
'I really apologize for dropping in like this. I totally understand if you're upset, I too would be angry if a stranger showed up on my doorstep this early". Matt says looking very sincere.
Hmm, I guess mom was right, this one might be different. I glance over at my mom who is doing a very terrible job at pretending not to be listening to Matt and I.
'It's okay, I guess. I didn't leave my mom much of a choice. I did turn down every attempt she made at trying to introduce you to me".
'Is anyone hungry? I have leftover pizza" I say heading over to the fridge.
'No honey, we ate on our way here and we're in a bit of a hurry. Come and sit, we have something to tell you".
