I had to bite my lips tightly to stop myself from sobbing out loud. "I'm so sorry." 

"Are you okay" Jake asked pulling away from the hug. 

I was always asked that question at the most terrible time, when I was not okay. But I couldn't just tell that to a kid, not after I left him alone in the mall.
