Claire was standing in front of her bedroom mirror, pulling on a tight black dress when I walked in.

She turned at the sound of the door, one earring half in. “Evelyn?”

I was soaked, still in my boots, suitcase dragging behind me like a broken promise. “I’m back,” I said quietly.
