Chapter 44

  Jake's POV

"Erm ok… guys let's take this somewhere more private shall we. William, can you let her go just for a second" I tried to keep my voice full of authority and void of any fear I held at telling him to release his 'mate'.

Watching as their eyes turned back to their original colour, I let go of a breath I didn't know I had been holding while William finally released his grip letting Rita go. A part of me worried that telling him what to do, and with his mate of all people would have erupted into a brawl. Had it been any other Alpha it most likely would have.

"Yes Alpha… thankyou" Rita responded her face turning red whilst straightening her dress.

As we got to my office I ushered in William, Rita and Angel before shutting the door.

"Mrs. Roberts, I extend my utmost apology. If I scared you then let me assure you, I whole heartedly didn't mean to… it was never my intention. You, your scent… this whole event just caught me and my wolf off guard. I had my fated mate when I was younger, your Queen Luna…. My Vanessa. Hck…. Sorry. It's just finding a second mate is rare in itself, but for an Alpha its unheard of" He looked at Rita with such awe as he apologized to her. I could feel the sincerity behind each word he spoke.

"Luna Queen…. I'm sorry" she looked at William bowing her head as she realized who he really was. "I am the one who needs to be sorry, I didn't know who you really were. Alpha King… please forgive me for the confusion and my disrespect of your lost mate for the way I looked at you"

Angel and I just looked at each other. Why was Rita apologizing to William? As far we were aware she had never insulted him in any way. We had only seen the look of lust as they discovered each other. A look that was natural amongst wolves.

"My dear please do not bow, yes I am the rightful King and yes I had my Luna. I loved her with all my being. I prayed to the moon goddess for years after Vanessa past… but I was never granted a second chance. And I'm sorry if I sound too forward but I would really like to get to know you before you reject me" He looked her in the eyes as he gently took her hand placing a meek kiss on the top of it.

I had to hand it to William for a man of his age and stature he certainly knew how to speak to the ladies. Just listening to the words that came from him made me think back to the moment I first met Angel, how much of a disrespectful arse I must have seemed to her. If I had been Angel, I wouldn't have let it slip the way she did. Rita stood there looking lost for words, she was a good wise woman, she always had everyone's interests at heart and helped with anything she could even though it wasn't her job.

"Rita… are you ok" Angel walked up to her taking her hand.

Rita looked up and at myself and Angel before staring at William. "I would love to get to know you but…. Its only fair you know that you too are my second chance. You see my mate, my husband… he was a pack warrior. He was the only man to ever hold my heart. The only man I have ever given myself to. He died during a rogue attack, before Alpha Jake took over from his father. It's been years so you will need to have patience."

"Mrs. Roberts, please understand I do not expect anything of you. I will not force you into anything you weren't comfortable with please know that. However, before you make your decision, I feel I should tell you something of importance. I have challenged the current Alpha King for my rightful place on the throne. Please don't fret, I will win, and he will fall at my hands. Though when I do win, I will need to stay in the Royal Kingdom…. Will you rule at my side as my Luna?"

"Well, if I'm to accept you as my mate and you me as your Luna, then I suppose you ought to call me by my name. Please call me Rita" Dropping Angels hand she stepped towards William placing a delicate kiss on his cheek.

"Aww I'm so happy for you dad… for both of you. With everything you have both been through in your lives you deserve a chance at happiness and I'm glad the moon goddess has paired you each with someone that will look after you"

"Angels right. And as Alpha of the Moonlight Pack, I wish you a lifetime of happiness."

  Williams POV

I couldn't believe it, a second chance mate. Though I was overjoyed I felt the slight tinge of pain in my heart knowing I had been mated to another after losing my first love Vanessa. Having a second chance for an Alpha was almost unheard of that's how rare an occurrence it was. Deep down I knew this had to be something to do with Vanessa, I just knew she was with her mother, Selena the moon goddess and convinced her to give me another chance at happiness. I just truly hoped she was at peace and knowing I would see her again when my time finally comes, I'll hold her in my arms and thank her.

Rita… an old-fashioned name, there sure wasn't many about anymore. Rita was by no means going to be as strong as Vanessa had been, so after we left Jakes office, I spoke to her about letting me train her. She was going to be the new Luna Queen, a position that someone was always going to try and take away from whom ever held it. I needed for her to be able to defend herself at the very least. When we do mark each other however, she will have but a fraction of my power run through her veins. It wouldn't be enough for her to fight off a pack by herself, but she would at least stand a chance.

"No need to look frightened my dear, I will go easy on you though with me having challenged Jason, I fear we will need to train quickly"

"Oh, I'm afraid you have me all wrong William. I'm not afraid of you hurting me… I'm afraid of me hurting you" she chuckled before shifting into a silver wolf.

"Your silver! I have heard about silver wolves but never in my lifetime did I think I would actually see one, let alone be mated to one"

I was void of any other words. During my Alpha training as a pup and preparing me to take over from my own father, the elders made sure to teach me about all the special wolves that had previously been known to exist. I knew Vanessa was special being as she was the birth daughter to the moon goddess but Rita…. She must be a descendant of the moon protectors. They were the only known wolves of this colour. The last recorded if what I remember from my childhood was correct was well over two hundred years ago. They were said to have been the protectors of the moon goddess and her beloved creations.

Why was I being entrusted with yet another special wolf or was she here to protect me. Moon protectors were said to be extremely voracious when they attacked. Their bite lethal to those they wish harm. I would have to make sure I stayed on her good side.

"Last time I checked I was silver" her wolf spoke.

"Well I never! Bot once did I learn you were able to talk in wolf form. What's your wolfs name?" I asked while stroking her fur.

"I don't exactly have a wolf spirit lie a normal wolf would. Being a silver wolf means we are our wolf in a sense. We can't tap into any heightened senses or strength like yourself as we have all those things all the time. With being classed as a moon protector we never know when a threat will appear, so when the moon goddess created our bloodline, she made it so we aren't caught off guard. If there wasn't time to shift or for our wolf to take over, we would easily be killed but this way, us being our wolf gives us the advantage. Or so I was told by my parents growing up."

"Does Jake or anyone else in this pack know of you being the wolf you are?"

"Goddess no. On our sixteenth birthdays we can shift for the first time. It's at this point the moon goddess herself visits us, she explains everything we are meant for and that unless absolutely necessary we are not to show our identity. The only other person that new of me was my husband and first mate"

"But what about your right of passage? Its part of our laws that once we receive our wolves, we are to take part in a pack run. It's a sign of respect to our wolf."

"The moon goddess took care of that too. Because we are one creature and don't contain the wolf spirit, if you were to sniff me in human form you wouldn't be able to sense me having a wolf. So, to answer your question regarding the right of passage, I simply didn't need to do it. The Alpha at the time didn't sense any wolf in me."

This was a lot of information to take in. The scrolls in which I did my studying when I was a pup were clearly missing a lot of information on moon protectors, now I know why. We spent the next few hours training in wolf form in the field behind the forest, we didn't need anyone knowing of Rita until they had to. Though now I had a nagging sensation in my mind; Rita was to be my Luna and that means not lying to our pack members, a lesson I learned the hard way with Vanessa. Had the Royal Pack known who she really was they would have all defended her with their lives, they wouldn't have left the job to one man to Nick. There was no way I was going to make the same mistake twice.
