CHAPTER 17 I Know You're Not From Here

  Dana POV

Yet another day unfolds, and I find myself darting through the lush expanse of the Sun Flower Pack, trailing alongside fellow omegas. Our nimble forms weave through the safety of the woods, cautious not to stray too far, lest we encounter the menacing rogues who prowl these parts, inflicting harm upon anyone they deem fit.

As I dash forward, a growing thirst tugs at my senses, signaling the need for respite.

"You should take a moment to rest," Xia suggested.

Gasping for breath, I acquiesced, allowing myself to collapse beneath the sheltering boughs of a nearby tree.

Drawing a deep breath, I fumbled for a water bottle nestled within my small pack, swiftly quenching my parched throat. Placing the bottle back, I focused on regulating my breath, relishing the wave of satisfaction coursing through my weary limbs.

"You should inform me sooner if you're running low on energy," Xia remarked. "I can help ease the strain during shifting," she offered, to which I simply nodded in agreement.

"Certainly," I replied, feeling the heat radiating from my spent body.

Securing my unruly hair with a simple bow, I leaned back against the tree's sturdy trunk, reveling in its comforting embrace.

Though an undercurrent of anger and sorrow gnaws at my heart, it no longer holds the same vice-like grip as before. It's as though I've bid farewell to cherished memories, trading them for new connections, unsure if this signals a waning love for Ares.

"I can't stop thinking about him," I murmured, tracing my fingers over the spot where he used to hold me so tightly.

Memories flood back to me, moments shared beneath the sheltering canopy of trees.

And then, his words resurface in my mind, like whispers on the wind.

"What are we, Dana?" he had asked, his eyes brimming with sincerity.

I chuckled softly. "What do you mean?"

"I want us to be serious," he declared. "I want you as my Luna, and nothing less. Can't you feel that we're mates?"

I scoffed playfully. "You're all I see, Ares."

With gentle grace, he took my hand, pressing a tender kiss to my palm. "I love you, Dana," he professed. "This love is real, and I've never felt it for anyone else. I trust only you." His gaze bore into mine, brimming with adoration.

Biting my lower lip, I whispered, "I love you too, Ares."

And in that moment, he bestowed upon me my first kiss, presenting me with a bracelet crafted by his own hands. His gestures of affection were always thoughtful, yet as tears streamed down my cheeks, I couldn't help but question my happiness, my healing.

The more I dwell on his liaison with the woman who caused me such pain, the more a fiery rage simmers within me, threatening to consume all in its path.

"Dana?" Anna's voice cut through my reverie, prompting me to hastily wipe away my tears. With a forced laugh, I rose to my feet, feigning exhaustion.

"Apologies," I chuckled weakly. "Just needed a moment's respite," I added, though I knew she saw through my facade. With a sigh, she rested her hands on her hips, her weariness evident.

"If you wish to succeed, you must press on," she remarked, her voice tinged with empathy.

If I am tired then what of her burdens? I wondered silently.

"I understand," I affirmed. "I have no right to falter- "

"No," she interjected firmly. "This is your first trial; it's only natural," she consoled, offering a reassuring pat on my shoulder.

"Thank you for your understanding," I murmured gratefully. "But I see now; I must persevere."

With a nod of acknowledgment, she queried, "Are you certain you're prepared? I fear I may have intruded upon your affairs."

  Without hesitation, I affirmed, "Absolutely!"

"Very well. How do you fare?" she inquired, studying me intently.

"I'm fine," I replied with a forced smile.

Gathering my belongings, I slung my pack over my shoulder.

"Now what?" I queried, ready to resume my duties.

Her lips pressed into a thin line, she murmured, "Proceed as planned."

Hours passed, and still, I pressed on, retracing my steps, engaging in the relentless routine of pack life. Despite the fatigue weighing heavy upon me, I refused to yield, spurred onward by the indomitable spirit of my companions. If they could endure, so too could I.

As dusk descended, I continued my solitary trek, venturing deeper into the forest, where danger lurked in the shadows.

"What compels you?" Xia's voice pierced the gathering gloom. "It's perilous, and you may encounter wild wolves."

"Fear must be confronted," I murmured defiantly, though inwardly, trepidation clawed at my resolve. Nevertheless, I pressed onward, guided by the primal instincts of my lupine heart.

"We're ill-equipped to face such adversaries," Xia cautioned, her senses attuned to the shifting currents of the forest.

"I yearn to embrace my fear," I confessed. "I'm weary of evading the inevitable- " My words faltered as a sudden presence, a tantalizing scent, disrupted the stillness of the night.

An electric tension filled the air, heightening my senses, as I strained to discern the source of the disturbance.

"Something is amiss," Xia declared, her instincts ablaze as she scanned the surroundings.

"Hello?" I called out tentatively, my gaze darting in every direction. With cautious steps, I forged ahead, only to collide with an unexpected obstacle- Bathel. Despite the initial shock, fear failed to take hold. Instead, I found myself drawn to him, an inexplicable sense of safety enveloping me in his presence.

"Bathel...?" I uttered softly, a sense of relief washing over me.

"What brings you here?" he inquired, his tone tinged with concern.

"Merely exploring... I can't divulge more," I responded, the rhythm of my heartbeat quickening.

Concern etched across his features, he explained, "I noticed your absence within the pack and felt compelled to search the woods. I always ensure the safety of my pack, as peril often lurks in the shadows."

His words resonated within me, casting a comforting glow amidst the encroaching darkness. For in that moment, I realized I was not merely an outsider but an integral part of their community, embraced by their protective embrace.

"You remember me..." I whispered, a faint smile tugging at my lips. "I'm fine, and though I shouldn't be here, rest assured, I'm perfectly safe."

"Do you truly believe I could forget you?" Bathel's gaze bore into mine, imprinting his words upon my soul.

My heart quickened its pace, drowning out the night's whispers, as his eyes held mine in a captivating embrace.

"I cannot say," I admitted, lost in the depths of his gaze. "For too often, I've been forgotten by those around me."

"Rest assured, I am not among them," he assured me, his sincerity evident in every word.

My eyes remained locked with his, drawn to the warmth and sincerity that radiated from him like a beacon in the night.

"I sense your reluctance to linger here, and I've observed your dedication to training," Bathel remarked, breaking the spell cast between us. "You should rest within the safety of the pack house. It's unwise to remain here."

Nodding in agreement, I replied, "Of course- " My breath hitched as a movement caught my eye behind him. In an instant, Bathel swept me behind him, shielding me from whatever threat loomed in the shadows.

"Stay behind me. You're safe. My wolf, Atlas, will protect you. I'm here," he reassured me through our mental link, his presence a steadfast anchor amidst the encroaching darkness.

"Who are you!?" Bathel's voice rang out, his stance unwavering as he confronted an unseen adversary.

"I know you're not from here."
