I shook my head and tried to change the topic.

"Today is your birthday little angel. What do you want to do and where do you want to go?" 

My daughter's eyes lit up at my question. "I want to go to the amusement park! Please, please, please?" she begged, her face full of excitement.

"But I thought you wanted to throw a birthday party at home to win friends. Why the sudden change of heart, my darling?" I asked her.
