CHAPTER 5 My First Shift

  LYDIA'S POV

  FEW HOURS EARLIER

As I lay in agony, the pain coursing through my body like wildfire, I found myself drifting in and out of consciousness. Each moment of clarity was fleeting, overshadowed by the overwhelming sensation of something sinister brewing within me. My gut clenched and unclenched with a ferocity that threatened to tear me apart from the inside out, leaving me gasping for air and clinging to the fragile threads of life.

The concoction the Luna had forced down my throat still lingered in my system, its effects gnawing at me with a malevolent intensity. I had no idea what dark magic she had woven into that vile elixir, but the malicious glint in her eyes as she watched me writhe in agony told me all I needed to know. Whatever she had given me, it was certainly not intended for my well-being.

As the night descended like a shroud over the forest, my body began to burn with a feverish heat that seemed to sear me from the inside out. Sweat beaded on my brow, mingling with the tears of pain that trailed down my cheeks. Each breath I took was a struggle, each heartbeat a thunderous drumbeat echoing in the hollow chambers of my chest.

In the depths of my delirium, I was acutely aware that this could very well be my final night on earth. Whether it was the Luna's twisted concoction or some other sinister force at play, the certainty of my impending demise weighed heavy on my soul. Bad or worse, my days were numbered, and there was nothing I could do to stop the inevitable march towards oblivion.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps shattered the oppressive silence, drawing me back from the brink of unconsciousness. Every nerve in my body screamed in protest as I strained to listen, my senses dulled by pain and fatigue. But even in my weakened state, I knew that those approaching footsteps carried with them the promise of either salvation or further torment.

As the door swung open with a heavy thud, my heart leaped into my throat at the sight of Manu standing before me. Oh, Moon Goddess, if this is truly my last day on this earth, please grant me the solace of a peaceful passing. I cannot endure any more torment, not from him, not from anyone.

He moved towards me with deliberate steps, his presence casting a shadow of dread over me. Despite his slow approach, the weight of his gaze bore down on me like a leaden weight, filling me with a sense of foreboding. I knew not what his intentions were, but given his lineage as the son of the Alpha and Luna, I could only imagine they were far from benevolent.

"Lydia?" His voice, surprisingly gentle, pierced through the silence of the room. I struggled to meet his gaze, fear and uncertainty clouding my vision.

He sighed heavily, lowering himself to crouch before me. "Lydia, I understand that you are in pain, that you have suffered greatly in this pack," he began, his words laced with an unexpected sincerity. "And I know that today is your birthday, a day that should be filled with joy and celebration, especially for one awaiting the awakening of their wolf."

His tone softened, a glimmer of warmth flickering in his eyes as he spoke. "Despite all you've endured, you've given so much to this pack and my family, enduring nothing but pain and torture in return. So, just this once, I want to do something for you. I want to offer you a gift, a surprise to mark this special moment."

A tentative smile graced his lips, a rare sight that filled me with both hope and skepticism. Could this be genuine? Could he truly be offering me a gesture of kindness, or was it merely another ploy to manipulate and deceive? Despite the uncertainty gnawing at my heart, I couldn't help but entertain the possibility that perhaps, just perhaps, there was a glimmer of humanity buried within him after all. But trust did not come easily, especially not when it came to someone like Manu.

He extended a hand to help me up, his touch surprisingly gentle as he guided me out of the pack house under the cloak of darkness. Each step we took felt like a surreal journey into the unknown, the weight of his presence beside me both comforting and unsettling.

We ventured out into the open fields, the moon casting its ethereal glow upon the landscape, illuminating the vast expanse before us. It was a place of solitude, a sanctuary away from the chaos and oppression of the pack house.

"Here is your destination," Manu spoke softly, his voice carrying a hint of sincerity that caught me off guard. "I came here to give you the space you might need for your first shift. You can run with your wolf for as long as you want. Consider it a birthday gift from me."

I stood there, stunned into silence by his unexpected gesture of kindness. Could this truly be happening? Was the same Manu who had made my life a living hell now extending an olive branch of peace? If I had harbored any doubts before, they were now overshadowed by a glimmer of hope.

As he turned to leave, I found myself compelled to speak, to acknowledge the unexpected kindness he had shown me. "Thank you, Manu," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.

He paused, casting a fleeting glance back at me, his gaze holding a depth I had never seen before. "Oh, hey Lydia," he called out, his voice carrying a sense of urgency. I turned to face him, curious as to what more he had to say.

"If you shift tonight," he continued, his words laden with a wisdom that belied his years, "let me give you a tip. It might hurt a little, but don't resist it. The more you resist, the more it is going to hurt you."

With that, he vanished into the night, leaving me standing there alone with his words echoing in my mind. Was this the same Manu who had tormented me relentlessly, or was there more to him than met the eye? Only time would tell.

As night descended upon the land, an eerie sense of transformation settled over me like a heavy cloak. Something was trying to consume me but the weight of uncertainty bore down upon my shoulders, each passing moment tinged with apprehension and fear.

I held onto my necklace, a crucial piece of my past, hoping that it would give me strength that I need for my first ever transformation.

Was I truly ready to face the unknown, to confront the beast lurking within me, my wolf?

Finally someone I would be able to call my own.

But doubt gnawed at the edges of my consciousness, whispers of insecurity echoing in the depths of my mind. What if my wolf emerged as a twisted reflection of the pain and suffering I had endured all my life? What if she recoiled at the sight of her broken vessel, casting me aside in disgust?

And then there was the haunting specter of rejection, the cruel fate that awaited those deemed unworthy by their destined mate.

The rejection from your fated mate.

The mere thought of such heartache sent a shiver down my spine, threatening to engulf me in a sea of despair.

I also cannot forget the words of the Alpha and his disgusting plan.

But amidst the turmoil of my racing thoughts, a glimmer of resolve emerged. I refused to let fear dictate my destiny, to allow the shadows of doubt to eclipse the light within me. For even in the darkest of nights, there existed a spark of hope, a flicker of courage that refused to be extinguished.

With newfound determination, I ventured forth into the moonlit night, allowing the cool grass beneath my feet to ground me in the present moment. Each step brought me closer to the inevitable, yet I embraced the fleeting freedom that surrounded me, if only for a moment.

As time wore on and the pain of transformation intensified, I sought solace in the solitude of the night, seeking refuge from the storm raging within. And then, as if guided by some unseen force, I halted in my tracks, sensing a presence lingering nearby.

With bated breath, I concealed myself in the shadows, straining to discern the source of the disturbance. Little did I know that the encounter awaiting me would forever alter the course of my fate, plunging me into a world of uncertainty and intrigue.
