CHAPTER 14 A DAUGHTER'S VIGIL

  LYDIA'S POV

The weight of the meeting hung heavy on my shoulders as I hurried through the corridors of the palace, my mind swirling with conflicting emotions. The proposal for the Heir Assessment had left me feeling shaken and vulnerable, but I pushed those thoughts aside as I focused on reaching my mother's side as soon as I heard that she collapsed suddenly and was not responding.

As I burst into the room where Kate lay, my heart constricted with fear at the sight before me. She appeared so frail and pale, her breathing shallow and laboured. Rushing to her side, I took her hand in mine, my fingers trembling with worry.

"Mother, what happened?" I asked, my voice quivering with concern.

The treating physician, with a grave expression etched upon his face, stepped forward to explain. "It appears that her condition has worsened," he said, his tone grave. "The poison in her system has reached a critical level. If she ingests even a small amount more, it could prove fatal."

My breath caught in my throat at his words, a surge of panic rising within me. How could this be happening? My mother, the one constant in my life, was now in grave danger, and I felt utterly helpless to save her.

Desperation clawed at my chest as I turned to the physician, my voice trembling with emotion. "What can we do to help her?" I implored, my eyes pleading for some shred of hope.

The physician's gaze softened with sympathy as he placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We must act quickly," he said, his voice firm. "We need to find a way to neutralize the poison in her system before it's too late."

A surge of determination coursed through me at his words, banishing the helplessness that threatened to overwhelm me. I may not have all the answers, but I would do whatever it took to save my mother even if that meant intense training to pass the heir assessment.

As the physician and his attendants worked tirelessly to stabilize my mother's condition, I remained by her side, my heart heavy with worry. Each passing moment felt like an eternity, each shallow breath she took was a painful reminder of the fragility of life.

After losing my father I cannot lose her as well, after all, she is the only family I have left. Only after achieving the throne, I can stop the corruption and the slow poisoning of my mother.

I will find the traitors and punish them for what they did to me and my family.

Brandon and Evan informed me about the attack that led to my kidnapping, moreover, they lost their father because of these same people.

And as the hours stretched on, I vowed to do whatever it took to ensure my mother's survival. For she was not just the queen of our kingdom, but the guiding light in my life, and I would move heaven and earth to keep her safe.

The weight of the situation pressed down on me like a suffocating blanket as I sat by my mother's side, the soft glow of the moon casting gentle shadows across the room as she rested in peaceful slumber. Her face, usually so full of life and vitality, now bears the weight of exhaustion and illness, and my heart aches to see her this way.

Tears threaten to spill from my eyes as I gaze upon her, a jumble of emotions swirling within me. Fear, worry and a profound sense of helplessness wash over me in waves, threatening to overwhelm my resolve. But I know I cannot afford to succumb to despair, not now, not when my mother needs me to be strong for her.

I reach out a trembling hand to brush a stray lock of hair from her forehead, my touch was gentle and tentative as if afraid to disturb her fragile rest.

"Mother," I whisper, my voice barely audible in the quiet of the room.

"I need you. Please, hold on. I can't do this without you." I pleaded.

My words hang in the air, a silent plea echoing in the darkness as I search for solace in the depths of my mother's dreams. I wonder what she would say if she were awake if she knew the weight of the burden that rests upon my shoulders. Would she offer words of comfort, reassurance that everything would be alright? Or would she simply hold me close, her presence a steadfast anchor in the storm?

But my mother remains asleep, her breathing steady and even, oblivious to the turmoil raging within my heart. And so I sit in silence, the only sound the gentle rhythm of her breathing, the only movement the rise and fall of her chest.

The urgency of her condition mingled with the daunting prospect of the Heir Assessment. My mind raced with thoughts of how to navigate these treacherous waters, each path fraught with its own dangers and uncertainties.

As I struggled to maintain my composure, Evan and Branden remained steadfast by my side, their presence a comforting anchor in the storm raging within me. Their assurances that they would help me pass the assessment as quickly as possible offered a glimmer of hope in the darkness, and for that, I was deeply grateful.

"Thank you," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper, as I reached out to grasp their hands in mine. "I don't know what I would do without you both."

Evan's gaze softened with understanding, his expression reflecting the depth of his commitment to supporting me through this ordeal. "We're in this together, Lydia," he said, his voice steady and reassuring. "Whatever challenges lie ahead, we'll face them as a team."

Branden nodded in agreement, his features set in a determined expression. "You're not alone in this, Lydia," he added, his tone resolute. "We'll do whatever it takes to help you succeed."

Their words washed over me like a soothing balm, easing the turmoil that churned within me and filling me with a renewed sense of determination. With Evan and Branden by my side, I knew that no matter how daunting the obstacles ahead, I would not face them alone.

As the hours passed and my mother's condition stabilized, a sense of calm descended upon the room, the tension of the previous moments gradually giving way to a quiet resolve. Though the challenges that lay ahead remained daunting, I took solace in the knowledge that I had allies I could rely on.

As I sat vigil by my mother's side, a flicker of hope ignited within me, burning bright amidst the darkness. For no matter what trials awaited me on the path ahead, I knew that with Evan and Branden by my side, I would face them with courage and strength.
