CHAPTER 17 OLEG

  EVAN'S POV

Stepping into Oleg's office, I had one thing on my mind: Lydia's safety. We needed to alter her records and hide her true identity, and I was counting on Oleg to help us. So, I arranged a meeting with him and we met in his office without anyone.

It was just us alone and I needed to set my plan in motion as soon as possible, there wasn't much time left.

"How are you, Oleg?" I questioned. After King Rufus, Oleg has always been our side, he doesn't talk much but his experience in this kingdom has always helped me and Brandon.

"I am good son, is everything okay? I mean you arranged this meeting on quite a short notice and you never do that. Is everything okay?" He questioned, his eyes held concern.

"Oleg, we need to make some changes to Lydia's identity," I said, cutting straight to the chase. "I need you to update her records for the heir assessment and ensure that her true identity remains hidden."

Oleg's nod was reassuring. "Hmm, that's a good plan and I understand why you want to take this step, Evan. I'll make sure everything is taken care of. Lydia's safety is of the utmost importance."

Relief flooded through me as Oleg agreed to assist us. I trusted him implicitly, knowing he'd do whatever it took to protect Lydia.

After our short conversation, I left but I realized I forgot my keys there so I had no option but to go back, but as I turned to leave, something stopped me. A faint sound from inside the door caught my attention, and I couldn't ignore it. I moved closer, straining to hear.

As I rounded the corner, my heart skipped a beat as I caught sight of Oleg and Jason deep in conversation. Their heads close together, their voices low, they seemed completely engrossed in whatever they were discussing. My instincts screamed at me to listen in, to find out what they were plotting, but I knew that getting caught eavesdropping could jeopardize everything.

Still, the mere sight of Oleg and Jason together sent a chill down my spine. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong, that Oleg's allegiance may not lie with us after all.

But as much as I wanted to confront Oleg, to demand answers, I knew I couldn't risk tipping him off to our suspicions. If he was indeed working with the nobles, then Lydia's safety was in even greater jeopardy.

With a heavy heart, I turned away from the scene, my mind racing with thoughts of how to protect Lydia from this new threat. Whatever Oleg and Jason were planning, I knew we couldn't afford to underestimate them. We would need to tread carefully, to stay one step ahead of the game if we had any hope of keeping Lydia safe.

But as I pondered our next move, one thing became painfully clear: Oleg's betrayal had changed everything. From now on, I would need to be extra cautious, to trust no one but myself when it came to protecting Lydia and her family from harm.

Heading back to my office, my mind raced with possibilities. Jason was already aware of our plan to change Lydia's identity, which meant that she was still in danger. Time was running out, and I knew I needed to act fast.

As I mulled over my options, a sense of urgency fuelled my determination. I couldn't let Lydia down – she was counting on me to keep her safe. With a steely resolve, I vowed to do whatever it took to protect her from harm.

But amidst the chaos of devising a plan, a heavy weight of guilt settled on my shoulders. I had failed to anticipate Oleg's betrayal, and now Lydia's safety hung in the balance because of it.

I called my brother and asked him to join me immediately, at this point he was the only person I could trust. He appeared pretty soon and I didn't waste time and informed him about my meeting with Oleg and what happened after that.

As I informed Branden about Oleg's secret dealings with the nobles and Jason, I could see the anger simmering beneath his usually composed exterior. But he quickly masked his emotions, his jaw clenched in determination.

"We need to do something about this," he said, his voice low and controlled. "We can't let Oleg get away with betraying us like this."

I nodded in agreement, knowing that we needed to tread carefully. Confronting Oleg directly could jeopardize our plans to protect Lydia during the heir assessment. We needed to be discreet.

"I have an idea," I began, outlining my plan for Branden to disguise himself as an Omega and participate in the assessment alongside Lydia. "You're skilled at disguising yourself, Branden. I trust you can pull this off."

Branden's eyes gleamed with determination as he nodded. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep Lydia safe," he said, his voice filled with resolve.

With a sense of relief, I watched as Branden transformed himself, his appearance changing so completely that even I struggled to recognize my own brother. It was a testament to his skill and dedication to our cause.

As he prepared to join the other Omegas in the assessment, I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride in my brother. Despite his anger towards Oleg, he remained focused on the task at hand, his loyalty to Lydia unwavering.

With Branden by Lydia's side, I knew she would have the protection she needed during the assessment. As I watched him disappear into the crowd, I felt a renewed sense of determination to bring down those who sought to harm her.
