CHAPTER 26 NEW ASSESSMENT

  EVAN'S POV

As Lydia prepared to depart for the next assessment, her demeanor radiated a quiet determination, her focus solely on the task at hand.

Her presence alone brought a sense of calm amidst the chaos that had consumed our lives in recent days. Despite the gravity of the situation, her smile was a beacon of hope in the darkness, a reminder that there was still beauty to be found amidst the turmoil.

Approaching her, I could see the tension that lingered in the lines of her face, the worry etched into her brow. I knew all too well the weight that rested upon her shoulders, the burden of caring for her mother in her time of need. With a gentle touch, I reached out to reassure her, offering whatever comfort I could in the face of uncertainty.

But my touch startled her and she turned to see me.

"Oh Evan? Hi, I am sorry I didn't see you there." She said hesitantly, with her heart beating fast and her eyes hiding something.

"It's okay, I knocked before entering but you were lost in your own world." I said.

"Yeah, lot of things are going on in my mind," she explained and I knew immediately why she looked worried and what she was worried about.

"I know what's bothering you." I said and she looked at me expectantly.

  "Hmm?" She frowned.

"It's Kate isn't it?" I questioned and she turned her face away to hide her sadness but I could sense it.

"Lydia," I began, my voice soft with reassurance, "I came to check on you, to see how you're holding up."

"I am fine, just worried, tired and a little bit injured," she was trying to hide her feelings by adding humour but I knew the truth.

"I visited your mother, she is doing well and meds are working just fine on her, I have also arranged my most trusted soldiers around her for her protection. If I am not around her, then her most trusted maid or Brandon is there. So you don't have to worry about her." I informed her and the relief that flooded her eyes was palpable, a testament to the depth of her concern for her mother's well-being. As I shared the news of Kate's stable condition, a flicker of hope ignited within her, dispelling the shadows of fear that had clouded her mind.

"Thank you, Evan," she whispered, her voice filled with gratitude. "You have no idea how much this means to me."

Her words touched something deep within me, stirring emotions that I had long kept buried beneath a facade of strength and composure. In that moment, I realized just how much Lydia meant to me, how deeply I cared for her well-being.

Lydia's words weighed heavily on my heart as she confided in me, her voice laced with uncertainty and fear. I could see the worry etched into her features, the lines of stress that marred her usually calm demeanor.

"I know, I can understand," I replied, my own voice soft with empathy. "But you don't have to carry this burden alone. We're all here for you, Lydia. We'll do whatever it takes to keep your mother safe."

As the beta, it was my duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our pack members, especially someone as important as Kate. With Lydia's health always at the forefront of my mind, I had taken extra precautions to ensure her safety, arranging for a team of trusted guards and chefs to watch over her in our absence.

"I've made sure that Kate has the best protection possible," I assured Lydia, hoping to ease some of her worries. "She'll have round-the-clock security, and I've personally overseen every detail to make sure nothing slips through the cracks."

Despite my reassurances, I could see that Lydia still carried a heavy weight upon her shoulders, her gaze troubled as she contemplated the challenges ahead. But as her mate, it was my duty to support her in any way I could, to be her rock in times of uncertainty.

"You're not alone in this, Lydia," I said, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand in a gesture of solidarity. "We'll get through this together, I promise."

As we stood there, united in our determination to protect those we loved, I felt a renewed sense of purpose wash over me. No matter what obstacles lay ahead, I would do whatever it took to keep Lydia and her mother safe. After all, they were not just members of our pack—they were family. And as their beta, it was my sworn duty to protect them with my life.

As I turned to leave after my conversation with Lydia, my mind already racing with plans to ensure her mother's safety, I was stopped in my tracks by Brandon's serious expression. Instinctively, I knew that something was amiss, and the furrow in his brow only confirmed my suspicions.

Without a word, Brandon gestured for me to follow him, and I fell into step beside him, my heart pounding with a sense of foreboding. As we moved away from the bustling activity of the base, Brandon's demeanor remained grave, his eyes fixed ahead with a steely resolve.

Finally, when we were alone and far from prying ears, Brandon turned to me, his voice low and urgent. "Evan, there's something you need to know," he began, his words carrying a weight of seriousness that made my blood run cold.

As Brandon shared Lydia's past traumas and the horrific treatment she endured at the hands of the North Light pack, a surge of anger welled up within me, hot and fierce. The thought of Lydia suffering in silence, enduring unimaginable pain and cruelty, filled me with a deep sense of rage.

No wonder she was malnourished and took longer to recover from her injuries. The pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place, painting a vivid picture of Lydia's past struggles and the strength she must possess to have endured it all.

Despite the gravity of the situation, there was also a sense of solidarity between Brandon and me, a shared bond forged by our mutual protective instinct towards Lydia. As mates, it was our duty to stand by her side, to shield her from harm and ensure that she never had to face such horrors again.

"Brandon, we have to do something," I said, my voice tinged with urgency. "No one should have to endure what Lydia went through. We have to make sure she's safe, no matter what."

Brandon nodded, his jaw set with determination. "Agreed," he replied, his gaze unwavering. "We'll do whatever it takes to protect her, Evan. She's our mate, and we won't let anyone hurt her ever again."

With a shared sense of purpose and resolve, Brandon and I set out to confront the demons of Lydia's past, determined to ensure that she could finally find peace and safety within our pack.
