CHAPTER 34 Betrayal in the Shadows

  LYDIA'S POV

"We've already lost our connection with our wolves once," one of the Omegas spoke up, his voice trembling with fear. "We can't risk losing it again. We're safer staying put."

His words struck a chord within me, resonating with the lingering doubts that had been gnawing at me since this ordeal began. Could it be that they were under some sort of influence, manipulated into acting against their better judgment?

I exchanged a worried glance with Brandon, silently imploring him to help me make sense of this inexplicable situation. But even as we shared our concerns, a seed of doubt took root in my mind. If the Omegas refused to heed my pleas, how could I hope to lead them out of this perilous situation?

"Lydia, we can't afford to linger here," Brandon murmured, his voice a gentle yet urgent plea. "We need to focus on our objective. If we show them that we're willing to take on the witches and find a way out, they might begin to see things differently."

Brandon's reassuring words were a comforting balm to my troubled mind as he spoke softly, his voice laced with empathy. "Lydia, I know this situation feels overwhelming right now, but we can't let fear hold us back. We need to find a way out of here, and I believe the witches hold the key to our escape."

I nodded, albeit reluctantly, still reeling from the sudden turn of events. "But what if they don't want to help us?" I voiced my concern, the uncertainty evident in my tone.

Brandon placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder, his gaze unwavering. "We won't know unless we try," he replied with conviction. "And besides, once we prove to everyone that you're not a threat, they'll see you in a different light."

His words resonated with me, stirring a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness that threatened to engulf us. We decided to go to the cave where the witches took us originally, our quick guess was that was the only cave here and we might find at least one of them who can help us.

As Brandon and I ventured deeper into the cave, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at the edges of my consciousness. Something about this place felt... off, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. But when I noticed strange symbols etched into the walls, my curiosity piqued, and I moved closer to examine them.

"These symbols..." I murmured, tracing the intricate lines with my fingers. "They look familiar."

Brandon stepped closer, his brows furrowed in concentration. "Familiar? How so?"

I took a deep breath, trying to recall the bits and pieces of knowledge Evan had imparted to me about the witches' language. "They're... they're in the witches' language," I explained, my voice tinged with uncertainty. "But... I've seen some of these symbols before."

Brandon's eyes widened in surprise and a little bit of something else. "You have?"

I nodded, my mind racing as I tried to piece together the fragments of information swirling in my head. "Evan taught me a few phrases in the witches' language," I continued. "If I can remember correctly..."

Closing my eyes, I focused on the memories of Evan's lessons, trying to summon the phrases he had taught me. And then, like a bolt of lightning, it hit me. The symbols began to make sense, forming words and phrases in my mind.

"They're directions," I exclaimed, my eyes snapping open as excitement surged through me. "These symbols... they're pointing us towards a location."

Brandon's expression softened, a glimmer of hope lighting up his features. "You mean we can find them?"

I nodded, determination coursing through my veins. "Yes. We just need to follow these symbols, and they'll lead us right to them."

With renewed resolve, we set off deeper into the cave, following the trail of symbols that would hopefully lead us to the witches and, ultimately, our escape from this sinister place.

As Brandon and I traced the symbols etched into the cave walls, a sense of urgency drove us forward. Each step brought us closer to uncovering the witches' whereabouts, and with it, the hope of escaping this ominous place. But just as we were about to press on, a sudden sharp pain erupted in my side, causing me to stumble and gasp in shock.

I looked down to see an arrow embedded in my flesh, the shaft trembling with the force of its impact. Agony radiated from the wound, stealing the breath from my lungs and sending waves of dizziness crashing over me.

"Lydia!" Brandon's voice echoed through the cavern, filled with concern and fear. I heard the urgency in his tone, felt the desperation in his words, but my senses were overwhelmed by the searing pain that threatened to consume me.

A guttural roar reverberated through the cave, tearing through the silence like thunder. It was a sound I knew all too well, the primal roar of a wolf pushed to the brink of desperation. It was Brandon, unleashing his raw fury in response to the threat that had befallen us.

But even as his roar filled the air, my strength waned, my vision growing dim as darkness closed in around me. With a trembling hand, I reached out to Brandon, desperate for his touch, his reassurance, but before our fingers could intertwine, the darkness claimed me, pulling me into its cold embrace.
