LYDIA'S POV
"I can't believe you're saying this," I replied, shaking my head. "I thought you understood me better than that. I won't sacrifice my happiness and freedom for political gain."
Brandon sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "We understand, Lydia. But you need to think strategically. The nobles are against you, and Heckim's support could turn the tide in your favor. It's not just about love; it's about survival."
I crossed my arms, my eyes blazing. "I refuse to be a pawn in their games. I've fought too hard to get here alone, and I won't compromise my principles now. I didn't need Heckim before and I don't think I need him now."
Evan placed a hand on my shoulder, his eyes filled with concern. "We're not asking you to give up on your dreams or principles. We just want you to consider all the options. We're worried about you, Lydia. The kingdom needs a strong leader, and Heckim could provide the support you need."
"Do you also think like the rest of them?" I asked, my voice tinged with frustration. "So you also think that I need someone by my side to rule? You don't think that I am capable enough, do you?"
"It's not like that," Brandon interjected, his tone calm but earnest. "We are concerned about the future of the kingdom. The corruption here is increasing day by day, the power is slowly shifting, and the nobles are becoming greedier. In this situation, it's not safe for you to acquire the throne alone. This kingdom needs a king."
I looked between them, my heart heavy with conflicting emotions. "This kingdom needs a rightful ruler. I appreciate your concern, but I won't marry someone I don't love. Heckim might be an ally, but I won't let him dictate my future."
Evan sighed, his hand still resting gently on my shoulder. "Lydia, we know you're capable. We've seen your strength and determination. But we also know that ruling alone comes with its own set of challenges, especially with the current state of affairs."
Brandon nodded, his eyes filled with empathy. "We're not saying you can't do it on your own. We just want to ensure you have every advantage possible. You deserve to succeed, and if Heckim's support can help stabilize the kingdom, it's worth considering."
I shook my head, resolute. "I understand where you're coming from, but I refuse to compromise my principles. Marrying Heckim might bring some immediate benefits, but it's not the solution. I need allies who respect me for who I am, not because of an alliance."
The actual question that I wanted to ask was, "Does our relationship mean nothing? Does this mean that their position as beta is more valuable to them than being my mate?" I was hurt and confused. Yes, I was vulnerable, but I refuse to let my confusing thoughts dictate my future. I won't make a decision until I'm certain.
I took a deep breath and tried to steady my voice. "I need some time alone. I will talk to you both when I'm ready. I want both of you to leave." My tone was firmer than I intended, but I couldn't hide the hurt and betrayal I felt.
Evan and Brandon exchanged a worried glance, but they nodded in understanding. "We're here for you, Lydia. Just let us know when you're ready," Evan said softly.
Brandon added, "Take all the time you need. We'll be waiting."
They left the room quietly, closing the door behind them. As soon as they were gone, I sank onto my bed, my heart heavy with conflicting emotions.
I couldn't believe they would suggest marrying Heckim. Their suggestion felt like a betrayal, as if our bond as mates wasn't enough to them. It made me question everything.
My mind raced with thoughts. I knew I needed to talk to Heckim about the support his pack could provide, but that didn't mean I had to marry him. We could still forge an alliance by being friends.
I wouldn't let this situation force me into a decision I wasn't ready to make. I needed to find a way to protect the kingdom and maintain my integrity. I wouldn't let the pressure from the nobles or my mates push me into something I didn't believe in.
My heart shattered at their decision, but I knew I needed to stay strong. I couldn't let my emotions cloud my judgment. I had to think clearly and act in the best interest of the kingdom. I would take the time I needed to process everything and make a firm decision about my future.
