LYDIA'S POV
Chloe crossed her arms, looking unimpressed. "Determination is not enough. Leadership requires experience and wisdom. You are young and unproven. Your kingdom is in turmoil, and you are struggling to gain control. How can I trust that you will be able to uphold any alliance?"
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my voice. "I am willing to learn, to grow, and to prove myself. If you give me a chance, I promise that I will not let you down."
She shook her head. "Promises are just words, Princess. I need to see action. Your kingdom needs to see action. Until you have secured your throne and demonstrated your capability as a ruler, your words hold no weight here."
I swallowed hard, feeling the sting of her rejection. "I understand," I said quietly, my voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you for your honesty."
Chloe's expression softened slightly. "Now, you have come a long way, so I invite you to stay here and have some rest. When you are ready, you can return to your kingdom," she said, her tone more compassionate but still firm. She turned away from us, signalling the end of our conversation.
As she left, I felt a mix of anger and determination simmering within me. I knew she was right—I had to prove myself. This rejection only fuelled my resolve to return to my kingdom and claim my rightful place on the throne.
Determined not to let this setback defeat me, I decided to stay the night in the pack, hoping to find another chance to prove myself. "I'll stay and leave tomorrow morning if that's okay with you," I said, ignoring the silent resistance from the Miller twins standing behind me.
Alpha Chloe raised an eyebrow, seemingly surprised by my decision. "Very well," she replied after a moment. "I'll have my pack maids arrange a guest room for you."
"Thank you, Alpha Chloe," I said, trying to convey my gratitude despite the tension between us.
She nodded curtly and turned to one of her pack members. "Maria, please show our guest to the east wing and ensure she has everything she needs for the night."
Maria, a young woman with a warm smile, stepped forward. "Of course, Alpha," she said, then turned to me. "If you'll follow me, Princess Lydia?"
As we walked through the halls of the West River Pack's stronghold, I couldn't help but feel the weight of the day's events pressing down on me. The pack house was grand and well-kept, a testament to the strength and unity of its members. Maria chatted pleasantly, trying to make me feel welcome.
"The east wing is quieter, more private," Maria explained as we walked. "I think you'll find it comfortable. If you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to ask."
"Thank you, Maria," I replied, appreciating her kindness. "I'm grateful for your hospitality."
She smiled and nodded. "It's our pleasure to host you, Princess. Alpha Chloe is a fair leader, but she's also very protective of our pack. I hope you understand her position."
"I do," I said, sighing. "She's right to be cautious. I just wish I could prove my intentions more effectively."
Maria gave me a sympathetic look as she opened the door to a spacious, well-appointed room. "This will be your room for the night. I'll bring some fresh linens and anything else you might need."
"Thank you again," I said, stepping inside and looking around. "This is more than I expected."
She nodded and left the room, closing the door behind her. Alone, I allowed myself to process the day's events and think about my next move. I couldn't afford to waste this opportunity. I had to find a way to show Alpha Chloe and her pack that I was serious about our alliance.
As I prepared for bed, I resolved to speak with Chloe again in the morning. Perhaps there was another way to earn her trust, to demonstrate my commitment to leading my kingdom with strength and wisdom. For now, I would rest and gather my thoughts, ready to face whatever challenges the new day would bring.
Maria then showed Evan and Brandon to their own room, ensuring they were comfortable before leaving them to rest. The tension between us had been palpable, and I appreciated the brief respite from their concerned glances.
As I settled into my room, there was a soft knock on the door. I opened it to find Heckim standing there, his expression a mix of relief and trepidation.
"Heckim," I greeted him, surprised but not entirely unprepared for his visit. "Please, come in."
He stepped inside, glancing around the room before his eyes settled on me. "Lydia, I heard you were here. I had to see you."
I gestured for him to sit down. "It's good to see you, Heckim. How have you been?"
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I've been better. Chloe is doing a great job leading the pack, but it's been hard stepping down. I wanted to talk to you about... everything."
I nodded, understanding the weight of his words. "I know things have been difficult. I heard about what happened after you returned from my kingdom. I'm sorry if I played a part in that."
Heckim shook his head. "It's not your fault. My feelings for you, they were my own. I thought I could win your heart, but I see now that it was one-sided."
I looked down, feeling a pang of guilt. "Heckim, I never meant to hurt you. The truth is, my heart belongs to someone else." I hesitated, not wanting to reveal too much. "There's someone very dear to me, and I can't imagine being with anyone else."
He looked at me, sadness and understanding mingling in his eyes. "I see. I'm glad you told me. It helps to know where you stand."
At that moment, there was another knock on the door, and Evan and Brandon entered the room.
