CHAPTER 79 Ambitious Revelations

  LYDIA'S POV

Alpha Marcus seemed somewhat convinced but pressed on. "While that may be true, alliances are often strengthened through marriages. Have you considered the benefits of such a union?"

I took a deep breath, knowing this question was bound to arise. "I understand the political advantages, Alpha Marcus, but I believe in ruling with authenticity. A forced marriage for power's sake is not the foundation I want for my reign. My focus is on building alliances through trust and mutual respect, not through superficial ties."

Alpha Elena nodded slowly. "That's a noble stance, Princess Lydia. Trust and respect are indeed the cornerstones of strong alliances."

Before I could respond, a new voice cut in, dripping with skepticism and mockery. "But don't you think as a woman it will be harder for you to make your place in the kingdom?" It was Alpha Chloe's beta and her husband, his tone condescending. "You are ambitious, which is good, but at some point, you will have to marry to produce heirs for the throne. And when you're tending to your young ones, who will take care of the kingdom, the people, the throne? That's why I still think that women shouldn't lead. Nature decided to make you like this. Sure, it's not your fault, but this is the truth. Women shouldn't lead because their priorities change eventually."

A hush fell over the group as his words hung in the air. I could feel the eyes of every Alpha on me, waiting for my response. Taking a deep breath, I faced him squarely.

"With all due respect, Beta," I began, my voice steady but firm, "the notion that women cannot lead because their priorities might change is outdated and insulting. History is filled with powerful female leaders who balanced their responsibilities as mothers and rulers."

Alpha Chloe's eyes flashed with a mix of anger and embarrassment. "Beta Joey, that's enough. Your personal beliefs do not reflect the stance of our pack."

But I wasn't done. "A leader's strength isn't determined by gender but by their ability to lead with wisdom and integrity. Yes, I may have to marry and have children, but that doesn't mean I'll abandon my duties. I'll ensure the kingdom is well-managed with a trusted council and capable advisors."

Alpha Marcus chimed in, trying to diffuse the tension. "Princess Lydia makes a valid point. Leadership is about capability, not gender."

Alpha Elena nodded. "I agree. We must look beyond traditional roles and see the value in each leader's unique strengths."

Beta Joey wasn't convinced, and his expressions remained stoic. "And what if your council fails you? What if your advisors turn against you? A woman's heart can be too trusting, too forgiving."

"Then it's my responsibility to choose wisely," I replied, my gaze unwavering. "Just as any leader, male or female, must do. The strength of a kingdom lies in its unity and trust, not in the gender of its ruler."

Alpha Chloe stepped forward, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Princess Lydia, I support your vision. Let's focus on what truly matters—building a future where all our people thrive."

We all raised to toast to a better future for all pack but I could sense that something shifted in Alpha Chloe's demeanour, she was not the same Alpha Chloe I met yesterday, her eyes held more respect for me and that's all I needed from her for now.

Everyone was enjoying the night, and I could tell that Alpha Chloe was truly an amazing host. Though the night was about her, she made sure that everyone was enjoying themselves. I really hoped that we could have worked together, but I would continue to try, and maybe one day we could.

I stood alone in a corner, trying to avoid the eyes of Evan, Brandon, and Heckim. Heckim was trying really hard to avoid me as well, but I did notice him watching me from afar. That made me feel guilty for what I did. Maybe he wasn't that bad; I just didn't share the same feelings.

"Princess Lydia, I hope you are enjoying your night." Alpha Chloe's voice startled me, and I turned to see her standing beside me.

"Yes, I am. Everything is amazing," I replied honestly.

"Good, I'm glad to hear that. If you are not occupied, I would like to have a word with you, alone," she said, her tone serious. I frowned, wondering what she wanted to discuss.

"Sure, is everything okay?" I questioned, my curiosity piqued.

"Everything is fine. I just want to discuss something privately," she reassured me. "Follow me."

We walked through the bustling hall, passing groups of Alphas and their guests engaged in lively conversations. Alpha Chloe led me to a quieter part of the pack house, a small, elegantly decorated sitting room.

"Please, have a seat," she said, gesturing to a plush armchair.

I sat down, and she took the chair opposite me, her expression thoughtful. "Princess Lydia, I want to apologize for Beta Joey's comments earlier. He doesn't speak for me or our pack's true stance. I've been thinking about what you said earlier, about your vision for your kingdom and your determination to rule without a king. It struck a chord with me.""

"Thank you, Alpha Chloe. I appreciate that," I said, nodding. "But I understand that some people hold those views, but I believe that the times have change."

"It's not just about the views, though," she continued. "I've been observing you tonight, and I see a lot of potential in you. You handled the situation with dignity and strength. Our pack has always valued strength and leadership, regardless of gender. But seeing someone like you, standing up against traditional expectations and aiming to lead with integrity, is inspiring."

"Thank you," I replied, surprised by her compliment. "That's all I've ever wanted. To build alliances based on mutual respect and shared goals. I believe we can achieve great things together.""

"And you're already doing so well, even without me," she acknowledged. "I know we started off on the wrong foot, but I believe we could be strong allies. The West River Pack values resilience and courage, and you've shown both."

"I'd like that, too," I admitted. "Our kingdom needs strong alliances, and I think we could benefit each other greatly."
