LYDIA'S POV
"Lydia, please," Evan began, his voice breaking. "Don't reject us. We made a mistake, and we know it. We're sorry."
Brandon stepped forward, his eyes pleading. "We let our sense of duty cloud our judgment, everything we did was to protect you, Lydia. Please give us another chance."
I felt my resolve waver for a moment, but then the memory of their earlier rejection and my own sense of betrayal resurfaced. "Your insistence on duty was just an excuse," I said, my voice firm. "A way to avoid admitting your true feelings for me. And now, after everything, you expect me to just forget that and give you another chance?"
"Lydia, we were wrong," Brandon said, his voice trembling. "Try to understand Lydia, rejecting us will weaken not only us but you also."
Evan nodded, tears in his eyes. "Try to understand us Lydia, we….our first priority has always been you."
I took a deep breath, trying to steady the tumult of emotions within me. "I appreciate your apologies, but it's too late. Your actions hurt me deeply. I need to focus on my kingdom and my duties now. You both made your choice, and so have I."
Their faces fell, heartbreak evident in their eyes, but they didn't argue further. They knew they had lost. With a heavy heart, I brushed past them, leaving the room and the West River pack behind.
As I exited the pack house, I found Alpha Chloe waiting for me with a contingent of her finest warriors. "Thank you, Alpha Chloe," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
She gave me a reassuring nod. "It's the least I can do. Stay strong, Lydia. We'll be in touch, and remember, you have allies here."
With that, I mounted my horse and set off with the escort, heading back to the palace. The journey was long, and the weight of my decisions pressed heavily on me. Yet, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. My kingdom needed me, and I would not let it down. The pain of leaving Evan and Brandon behind was profound, but it was a sacrifice I had to make for the greater good.
As we rode towards the palace, my thoughts churned with the upcoming confrontation. Jason's family had schemed against me, and I would not let their betrayal go unpunished. This was the first task I needed to address upon my return. The Miller brothers were still not here, giving me time to focus on the more immediate and pressing matter at hand.
The familiar hallways of the palace greeted me, filled with the echoes of past conflicts and alliances. I wasted no time and demanded a meeting with Jason's family. They arrived in half an hour, looking apprehensive and curious.
Jason's father, Lord William, was the first to speak. "Princess Lydia, what is the meaning of this sudden gathering?"
I narrowed my eyes at him, my voice steely with determination. "Your family attempted to sabotage a crucial meeting with the West River pack, endangering the entire kingdom's safety. Furthermore, you conspired against me."
Their eyes widened in shock, but I continued before they could interrupt. "I have proof and witnesses to substantiate my claims."
Lady Evangeline, Jason's sister, stepped forward, her face a mask of indignant disbelief. "We did no such thing! These accusations are baseless."
I fixed her with a cold stare. "Baseless? Allow me to enlighten you."
I nodded to one of my guards, who brought forward a written statement from Beta Joey, detailing his involvement and the orders he received. "This is a signed confession from Beta Joey of the West River pack. He admits to spiking my drink under your instruction."
Lord William's face turned pale. "This... this is preposterous. We have no connection with Beta Joey."
I raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? He also mentioned receiving a call from someone in the kingdom orchestrating the entire plan. And who else would have the motive and means to do so?"
Lady Evangeline glanced nervously at her father before speaking again. "This is a misunderstanding. Beta Joey must be lying to save himself."
I shook my head. "You underestimate the severity of the situation. Beta Joey had no reason to lie. His confession was corroborated by others who overheard the planning."
There was a tense silence as they processed my words. Finally, Lord William spoke, his voice shaky. "What do you intend to do?"
"I intend to see justice served," I said firmly. "Your actions have jeopardized not only my life but the stability of the kingdom. You will face the consequences of your treachery."
Evangeline's eyes filled with tears. "Princess Lydia, please, show us mercy. We acted out of desperation and fear. We never meant for things to go this far."
Lord William fell to his knees, pleading. "We beg of you, Princess. Our family has served the kingdom loyally for generations. Do not let one mistake ruin everything."
I remained unmoved by their pleas. "Your betrayal cannot go unpunished. The safety of the kingdom and my own life were at stake because of your actions. Mercy would be a disservice to the people I am sworn to protect."
Seeing no change in my stance, they finally accepted their fate, albeit with great reluctance and sorrow. "We understand," Lord William said, his voice breaking. "We will accept our punishment."
"I will personally oversee your imprisonment," I declared, not trusting anyone else to ensure they faced justice. "You will be taken to the dungeons and held there until the council decides your ultimate fate."
I turned to the guards. "Escort them to the dungeons. Ensure they are securely confined."
The guards nodded and began to lead the family away. Evangeline sobbed quietly, clinging to her father's arm, while Lord William walked with a defeated slump.
As they disappeared down the hallway, I felt a pang of sadness mixed with my resolve. This was not a victory to celebrate, but a necessary step to ensure the kingdom's safety.
I followed them to the dungeons, watching as they were locked away. The cold, damp cells were a stark contrast to the luxurious life they had known. "This is for the good of the kingdom," I reminded myself.
