CHAPTER 98 The Demon

  LYDIA'S POV

The realization was almost too much to bear, but I forced myself to remain still and silent.

"I understand," Alpha Matthews replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's just… we have so few left. I cannot keep sacrificing my people like this."

"Then find more sacrifices, Alpha," the first voice said coldly. "The demons demand payment. Fail to deliver, and your pack will suffer the consequences."

Alpha Matthews' silence spoke volumes. He was trapped, desperate, and willing to do anything to save his pack—even if it meant making deals with demons and sacrificing innocents. He was doing his duty as the Alpha.

I can't stay here any longer, I need a plan of escape.

I lay on the cold stone altar, feigning unconsciousness, my mind racing as I tried to make sense of the fragments of conversation I was hearing. The damp air of the cavern mingled with the acrid scent of incense, creating an oppressive atmosphere that made it difficult to concentrate. Yet, I forced myself to stay alert, to listen. It was the only way I would understand what was happening and find a way to escape.

Alpha Matthews and the two hooded figures continued their ritual, their voices weaving together in a chilling chant. The language was unfamiliar, the words alien and dark. I focused on their conversation, hoping to glean any information that could aid in my escape.

"The ritual is complete," one of the hooded figures finally said, their voice dripping with satisfaction. "Now we wait for them to collect the sacrifice."

I felt a chill run down my spine. They were waiting for something—or someone—to come and take me.

"Should we wait here?" Alpha Matthews asked, his voice tense and uncertain.

"No," the other hooded figure replied sharply. "They will only come and take her when she is completely surrounded by darkness. They won't reveal themselves to just anyone."

The words sent a fresh wave of fear through me, but they also gave me a glimmer of hope. If they were leaving me alone in the darkness, it meant I had a window of opportunity to escape. I needed a plan, and I needed it fast.

The hooded figures and Alpha Matthews moved away from the altar, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls as they retreated into the shadows. I waited, counting the seconds in my head, ensuring they were far enough away before making my move.

Slowly, I opened my eyes and glanced around. The room was dimly lit by flickering candles, casting long, eerie shadows. The altar was situated in the center of the room, surrounded by strange symbols and markings etched into the floor. The air was thick with an oppressive energy, making it hard to breathe.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what I needed to do. Carefully, I slid off the altar, my movements slow and deliberate to avoid making any noise. My feet touched the cold stone floor, and I crouched low, scanning the room for any signs of movement.

Seeing none, I began to creep towards the exit, my heart pounding in my chest. The stone corridors were labyrinthine, and I had to rely on my instincts to guide me. The dim light of the candles barely illuminated the way, casting ominous shadows that seemed to dance and flicker with every step I took.

As I approached the entrance, a low growl echoed through the passage. I froze, my breath catching in my throat. Emerging from the shadows was a colossal figure, its form towering and monstrous. The demon was unlike anything I had ever seen, its skin a mottled gray, with eyes that glowed like embers in the darkness. Its presence exuded a malevolent power that made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

I knew I had to move quickly. Summoning all my courage, I darted to the side, hoping to slip past the demon. But it moved with a speed that belied its massive size, blocking my path with a single, swift motion.

"Where do you think you're going, little one?" the demon rumbled, its voice deep and resonant, reverberating through the stone walls.

"I can't stay here any longer," I said, trying to keep my voice steady despite the fear coursing through me. "I won't be your sacrifice."

The demon chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down my spine. "You think you can escape? There is no way out. Your fate is sealed."

I glanced around, searching for any possible escape route. The corridors were narrow, the walls close and there was no way out of this situation.

  What do I do now?

I looked around desperately, searching for any possible escape route. The stone walls of the chamber loomed around me, their rough surfaces reflecting the dim light of the flickering candles. The demon's presence was an overwhelming force, filling the room with a palpable sense of dread. When I couldn't find any way out, I knew I only had one option left.

  To fight.

It was do or die, but I refused to be the sacrifice.

The demon loomed before me, its massive form blocking the only exit. Its eyes glowed like embers, and a sinister grin spread across its grotesque face. This was going to be the toughest fight of my life, but I couldn't back down.
