CHAPTER 148 Having him back

  LYDIA'S POV

I looked at the ruins and sat there for a moment, thinking of what had happened in the past 24 hours. Getting kidnapped, almost raped, and almost being married to someone else was one thing, but losing Evan was not something I ever expected.

My Lycan was mourning, a deep, guttural pain that resonated within me. I felt like I wanted to cry, scream, and hurt something or somebody just to lessen the pain inside my heart. The pain of losing Evan was too much. I felt like my heart would explode, and I wouldn't be able to live. Brandon was silent too, the pain of losing his twin must be too much for him. We held each other and sat there looking at the rubble of the building we barely escaped.

"Why did I leave? I should have stayed there with him. He doesn't deserve this," I whispered, my voice almost cracking with the emotional pressure I was feeling from inside.

"Don't say that, Lydia. Evan was my twin. I am equally responsible," Brandon replied, his voice filled with sorrow and guilt.

I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. "I promised him I'd come back for him. I promised…"

Brandon squeezed my hand, his grip strong but trembling. "We both promised. And we will find him. He's strong, Lydia. He's a fighter."

We sat there in silence, the weight of our grief heavy on our shoulders. The ruins of the pack house loomed before us, a stark reminder of the battle we had fought and the sacrifices we had made. The air was thick with dust and the lingering scent of smoke, a somber testament to the destruction that had taken place.

Suddenly, a faint whisper brushed against my mind. It was weak and barely audible, but I recognized it instantly. It was Evan. I gasped, my heart pounding in my chest.

"Brandon, did you hear that?" I asked, my voice urgent.

Brandon's eyes widened. "Evan? Evan, can you hear us?"

We both concentrated, opening our minds to the Mind Link that connected us to Evan. The connection was faint, but it was there. A flicker of hope sparked within me, and I clung to it desperately.

"Evan, where are you?" I called out through the Mind Link. "We're coming for you. Just hold on."

The response was weak, but it was enough. "Lydia… Brandon… I'm… here…"

The relief that washed over me was overwhelming. I could feel Evan's pain and exhaustion, but he was alive. "We're coming, Evan. Just hold on a little longer."

Brandon and I scrambled to our feet, our determination renewed. We carefully made our way through the rubble, following the faint thread of the Mind Link that guided us to Evan's location. The debris was treacherous, and every step was a struggle, but we pressed on, driven by the need to find our mate.

As we approached a particularly large pile of rubble, the connection grew stronger. Evan was close. I reached out with my senses, feeling the pulsing energy of his presence beneath the debris.

"Here!" I shouted, pointing to the spot. "He's under here!"

Brandon and I began to dig, our hands moving frantically to clear away the rubble. The debris was heavy and unyielding, but we didn't stop. The thought of Evan lying beneath it, injured and alone, pushed us to keep going.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we uncovered a small opening. I peered inside, my heart pounding. "Evan? Are you there?"

A weak groan answered me, and I saw a glimpse of his face through the debris. "Lydia… Brandon…"

"We're here, Evan. We're getting you out," I said, my voice choked with emotion.

With renewed determination, we cleared away the remaining rubble, finally freeing Evan from his prison. He was badly injured, his body battered and bruised, but he was alive. I reached out and gently cradled his head, my tears falling onto his face.

"You're safe now, Evan. We're here," I whispered, my voice trembling.

Brandon helped me lift Evan out of the rubble, supporting his weight as we carefully moved him to a safer area. The relief of having him back with us was immense, but the sight of his injuries filled me with dread.

"Evan, stay with us," Brandon urged, his voice filled with desperation. "You're going to be okay. We're going to get you help."

Evan's eyes fluttered open, and he looked at us with a weak smile. "You're finally… here…"

"Of course we are," I said, my voice breaking. "We would never leave you."

As we tended to Evan's wounds, the rest of the pack members gathered around us, their faces filled with concern and relief. Manu approached, his expression a mix of guilt and gratitude.

"Thank you," Manu said quietly. "For saving me. For saving all of us."

Brandon looked up, his eyes fierce. "We're not done yet. We need to get Evan to safety, and we need to rebuild. This pack deserves better."

Manu nodded, his resolve firm. "We'll do it. Together."
