Emma's Pov
Once we're in the car, with Matthew maneuvering to leave the parking spot, I question him, "What was that inside?" My voice comes out harsher and sterner than I planned. Keep calm, Emma, keep calm.
Matthew looks at me with furrowed eyebrows, "Many impressive things happened in there; be more specific, Emma," Matthew retorts as he turns the wheel.
"Oh, you'll be my guest of honor. Oh, this necklace looks so beautiful on you," I mimic Matthew's lines in an exaggerated and disdainful tone, rolling my eyes and making a face as if I were Matthew.
Alpha Matthew, in turn, laughs at my performance, and his green eyes soften in my direction, gaining a more playful and teasing expression. "Emma Smith, are you jealous?" he asks with a humor-laden voice. I cross my arms in front of my body and huff at him in response. "It was you who challenged me to be gentler. To have good manners, remember?" he responds with mischief in his voice. "Looks like the spell, Miss Emma, has turned against the sorcerer, doesn't it?" he replies, laughing, and I grumble with still lingering irritability.
"You're impossible, Matthew... simply impossible," I announce angrily, and Matthew opens another smile in my direction.
"We both know that's not true," Matthew places his hand on my thigh and gives it a firm squeeze, causing me to startle and, at the same time, I shiver.
The ride home was filled with questions and theories. I swore to Matthew that Emily was identical to Ava.
"Maybe Alpha Tim Davis and Luna Lianna had twins, and Milena Golden kidnapped one?" I muse thoughtfully. "Or the other way around? Milena Golden had twins, and the alpha and Luna of the Moonshadow Pack took one, and now Milena is blackmailing him? That's why they have a strong connection?"
"It's a strong theory. But who died in the forest? And this illness of Emily's? The blackouts? Don't you find that a bit strange?" Matthew raises the issue with a more serious tone. I nod my head and realize that the trip was eventful after all.
"Thank you," I say when we reach the garage of Matthew's house. He turns his face to look at me, and I do the same with him, "for everything you've done to help me. Thank you for accompanying me today."
A calm and small smile appears on Matthew's lips, "You're welcome, Emma. I'll always be here for that," Matthew responds.
At lunchtime, Charlotte was chatty about how her day was going with our absence.
"I did homework with Kali and Bea; they helped me unravel some really difficult geography questions, it was fun," Charlotte comments before taking a sip of juice. "But Emma, how is Ava?
Did she enjoy your visit?"
Matthew and I exchanged glances at Charlotte's question, and I tried to find a way to explain to her what we found. "Well, I think we found something similar to Ava, actually. Her name is Emily, and the visit was quite interesting, my little wolf," I reply with false joy. However, Charlotte shakes her head as if I misunderstood her question.
"Oh no. Does she still believe she's Emily?" Charlotte asks with a downtrodden expression.
"What do you mean, Lotte?" Matthew asks, concerned for his younger sister.
With a heavy sigh, Charlotte answers her brother as if he were a child, like her. "She's Ava, but she's confused. It's like playing that I'm a unicorn for a long time and end up forgetting that I'm Charlotte and not a unicorn, you know? Ava has been playing as Emily for a long time, but she's not."
So it was Ava this morning! The confusion in my mind mixes with the joy of knowing that Ava is truly alive and well. She was indeed my best friend in that house.
I open an excited smile as I understand what Charlotte is declaring, feeling overwhelming happiness coursing through my entire body. Even though I can't understand how all of this is possible, I accept the good news.
"How can we make her remember that she's Ava and not Emily, my little wolf?" I ask Charlotte with high expectations.
The little wolf makes a thoughtful face that makes me want to shower her with kisses for being so cute. She takes another sip of her juice before responding to me, "It's like she's asleep, Emma. A potion of a black, blue, and red cat should help her wake up."
I raise an eyebrow totally confused by Charlotte's declaration.
Black, blue, and red cat? Potion? I shake my head in confusion and look at Matthew, who also displays the same mental confusion as me.
"Black, blue, and red cat, Lotte? Are you sure?" Matthew asks his sister affectionately, and she nods.
"Yes, it's a very cool kitten. Very fun, he'll help you with Ava. He knows how to do many cool spells. Don't forget to invite him to your birthday, big brother, please!" Charlotte responds excitedly.
"Sure, as soon as I see the black, blue, and red cat, I'll invite him to my birthday, Lotte," Matthew responds confused.
Charlotte goes back to talking about school and her friends; Matthew and I exchange some glances during lunch. Where, by the moon goddess, am I going to find a tricolor cat? And one that does magic?
Now I understand why Matthew doesn't believe much in Charlotte's prophetic visions; often they are too confusing for us to decipher what she means. But even so, knowing that Ava is truly alive fills me with hope more and more that the first thing Charlotte told me will come true.
Everything will be fine.、
